Is there such as too many keywords?

Discussion in 'Google AdWords' started by maha, Jun 30, 2006.

Sometimes I use Adwords keyword tool and it has a list of 50-100 keywords for a particular keyword search. Do I add all the keywords or do I select what I think is the most relevent, is so how many? I read that using FOUR word keywords since they start become "useless"

Where is the "cut off" for selecting number of keywords for an Ad Group? If there such thing as too many keywords for an Ad Group?

    Any thoughts or suggestions?

    adgroup limit: 2,000 keywords

    account limit: 50,000 keywords

The account limit can negotiated with adwords staff

But try to stay far from this limit: do not add too much keyword to a same adgroup - stay organized: create different adgroups divided by topics with different ads for each one

As long as they're all relevant, the more keywords the better; I currently run about 10,000 keywords over about 100 groups.

You'll probably find that the more specific 3 or 4 word phrases convert a lot better than the broad 1 or 2 word phrases and are cheaper as well, so although they will get far fewer overall searches & clicks every month, it's definitely worthwhile targeting them.

Developing the 'tail' as these low volume phrases are known, can get you a LOT of cheap, highly targeted clicks.

Quoting Adrew Goodman's book "Four-word broad matches are rarely worth bothering with

Does that mean any larger (4+) keywords, it should be exact matches?

Try to pick targetted keywords that will convert well to your product.

It is not the quantity of click but the quality of click what matters. Do not go for every other keywords in the directory.

    1. Use all three Matching Options.
    2. Stay focussed.
    3. Experiment with pricing of Keyword. Even reduce them to lowest. Sometimes it pays to reduce it. You CTR will go down, but you will avoid the unwanted clicks and attract real interested visitors when you are at 2,3,4,5,6 positions. According to Gurus, we should avoid getting at the top at the expense of CPC.

    4. Make different Ad groups for different categories and check which one is producing results.
    5. At best you should use tracking software for sales. Try not to use Google for that.
