How to Limit WordPress Post Words?

I need php code for setting limit of post words in my index.php file. ( for my sig blogs)

Note: I know plugin which can do it but i need php code for manually doing it.

if you need plugin, you can use limit posts automatically plugin.
I am using it on my blog and works fine.
