Linking strategy

    Guys,

I have found a few niches where all the competition on the 1st page have few links and little or no PR... Take a look:-

    Site 1 - PR3, links 3
    Site 2 - PR2, links 5
    Site 3 - PR0, links 100

Obviously this highlights the importance of PR and that PR does play a part in ranking!

Now, listen to the tools I have to my disposal -

I have found around 500 high PR pages which are dofollow and which I can comment on... PR is around 2-6.
I have found 500 commentable .gov pages and around 300.edu commentable pages, all with very few outbound links
I have a way of getting highly relevant blog pages to comment on, however 99% of these will be PR0.

Now, what do you think my linking strategy should be guys?!?!

Because a lot of the pages are blogs, whatever stragegy I am going to do, I am going to comment all in one day.... Because I am aware that with Wordpress blogs, if one person marks your comment as spam, it is a lot harder to get approved.

I was thinking of doing around 10 highly relevant comments on PR pages with my name in the author section, so not using anchor text, cos they are more likely to get approved. Highly relevant comments on the .edu/.gov pages and lots of comments on the relevant PR0 pages.

    Thoughts?!?!

I found that if you commented and used Name (keyword) Last name then when you posted, at the end put your full name the posts get approved. But it has to be relevant.

PR is worthless when it comes to SERP.

my biggest competition is a PR 0 with 1,650 links. He is right below me in the non-sponsored Google results.

My site is PR 4 with 6,400 links.

Maybe you shouldn't do spammy comments so you don't have to worry about getting marked as spam? :)

It's really that simple. Don't use your keyword phrase as your name either. My name here is a great way to get them in your links - never had a comment deleted.

It is? Since when? I though where you ranked in the search engine results for your keywords was the most important thing...? When did the "rules" change?

    Not quite.

PR can help, but the most important thing in the Google algorithm is relevance. Here is an example,
Lets say you target the keyword "dog training" and you optimize your site to rank well for the term
    Dog training
IF your site is PR0 but has 1000 links with anchor text of "dog training" all coming from Dog training related websites, then you will rank higher than a PR4 site about dog training, but has 4000 (high PR )links coming different anchor text such as dog grooming, dog types, dog help, etc.

The PR 4 site will always rank well in the SERPs for virtually every term related to dogs, but it is possible that a lower PR site could rank better for one particular keyword phrase, within the dog niche.

As many have pointed out PR has almost nothing to do with rankings. I can get PR0 sites ranked on the front page with quality content and quality links. They don't stay PR0 but everyone needs to quit worrying about PR and start worrying about great content and good links from lot's of sources. No-follow blog comments are worth their weight in gold if you take the time to do it right.
