It is unlikely that any kind of backlinks are positively harmful to your website. Some kinds of links might be worth less than others though. Links from high PR pages on a similar topic to yours are worth most.

link exchanges can be dangerous, paid links can get you in trouble, links from 'bad neighborhoods' can harm you and links from domains that are obviously related can be injurious. OK?

Keep in mind that you should vary the anchor text of your links. Use you URL, brand and a range of synonyms to make your backlink profile look natural.

    Paid Directories can be harmful.

My closest competitor in Google SERP has a Page Rank of Zero (0) because he had too many "bought" links.

When Google finds out that you are buying links, they penalize you with Zero Page Rank.

No they don't. They penalize the site that gives the paid links, making those links worth a lot less. Maybe that competitor just plain doesn't have any others.

Why would paid directories hurt you and free ones not? It'd seem you're paying for a more quality backlink.

It is an art if you want to build a nature backlink instead of spam. Below are some ways i ofthen do to build backlinks for my website.

1.set up your blog and write some articles which includes your keywords' archor text" in it.

2.Post your topic on the related forum, and set your keywords' archor text" as your proofs to support your idea, but remember not to spam.

    3. Write some articles and submit them to free articles submit website. Leave the links that poit to your website.

    4. write pree release about your products and your website' news.

    5. add your links on some social bookmark website.

If you do not think build links from others is a good idea, then pay much attention on offering valuable contents on your website. Content is the king for building backlinks.

The links that are shared which are related to your site's category will be treated as a Quality Backlink..And the links which are totally unrelated to your niche are backlinks without quality and no use with them...Thanks for sharing.
