Tips for everyone who uses forums to build links

    Always check three things:

    • That the links in signatures show up to visitors

    • That the links in signatures are do-follow

    • That the forum shows posts from all time, and not just recently active. Many don't! You can see the defaults, in a vBulletin forum, at the bottom left of the post lists. "From the Beginning" is what you want. Many of the high PR forums only do a limited amount of days.

    Bonus:

    • Make a signature there people will want to click on. You'll get both the search benefits, and free visitors too!

Hope it helps you not waste some time link building. Any of your own you want to share? :)

basic tips, but good ones :) i usually search for top ranking vBulletin boards at http://bir-boards.com from my niche, search them a bit to find if users have signatures on and then a couple of links from those signatures with a link checker. If the forum URL appears there ... it means that signatures allowed there are do-follow :)

so what do you think of the link value though of say 100 backlinks from 1 forum? IMO they do't have much value.

    One other bit of advice:

Pick forums that are RELEVANT to your KW.

For example, my niche is "Disc Jockeys, DJs, music, karaoke, weddings"

I try to find DJ Forums that have similar KW to mine!

Relevant forums get the best results, from my own experience.

The most important point never write.
Always make the information/helpful post, eevnthrough your signature i a single word, the forum member will click on it.

one more helpful tip from me. ::::::::::::

adding anything in signature after just signup. becaz our link in signature always show which post is made after adding signature first time.

exa. if i m add my siganture first time on my post count 10 and now i m have post 12 then signature is only show on 10, 11, and 12.

so dont forgot to add anything (like smiley) after just signup so your signature will show on all your posts.

Looks like a good link that big-boards one. I have had trouble finding good forums for my niche (HDTV), but the few that I have found are rarely updated so I don't have too much to write. From the messages I have left though I have gotten a decent amount of traffic.

One thing I would like to add to that list - when you join a forum ask if the sites submits a site map to google or yahoo. Sites that submit a site map to google are more likely to have more of their urls listed, as compared to a site that does not have a site map.

I have seen some forums that have over 1 million post, but only have 20,000 indexed pages. And then I have seen sites that have 500,000 post and have 300,000 pages indexed.

When I join a forum, I'll keep an eye on my google webmaster tools to see how fast that site gets indexed.

Post in forum A - and 3 weeks later the post are still not showing up in my google webmaster tools. I will not post in that forum very much.

Post in forum B - and in 3 weeks a lot of my post have been indexed. I will continue to post in that forum.

Even though you might throw 100 post out there, it does no good if those pages are not indexed. Google is good at crawling sites, but its not perfect. This is where the site map comes in. If I know for a fact that a site submits a site map, I am more likely to post in that forum.

So if you have a choice between two forums, one submits a site map and the other does not - I would pick the forum that does submit a site map.

We can build effective backlinks if we stick to a strategy of signing up with a new forum every day regularly and posting atleast 10 or 20 enough to make signatures active. Check these forum posts that you did after two weeks if signatures are working. Otherwise post some more.
This will slowly build links which are very effective than posting on one forum every day. For traffic sticking to few popular forums should be good.

Useful tips to link building. But suppose you have made 10 post with anchor text LINK1 in your signature and then you decided to change the anchor text to LINK2 for your new posts. Do all the previous anchor text also change to LINK2 or stay as LINK1 ?

Basicly can you use many anchor text in your signature over time without affecting your previous links & anchor text ?

Write a quality post and submit the actual post to social bookmarks. You will be surprised how much traffic you can get from your forum signature this way.

I just do it in a natural way. I would only contribute useful content or truely what I thought in a forum that I'm interested in or where I can get some work tips. Relerance is very importan by the way, if the tipic or forum theme has got the related keyword, then it would have better effect.

In the majority of cases I believe not... usually it is a case of they will change in all your old posts, not just keep the old links on the old posts.

BUT be careful - i think its been said elsewhere on here (but i've spread my reading of the thread over a bit of time so not sure) because they usually only count from what post you activated a signature from (whats in it doesnt matter) so you should put a signature up ASAP. it doesnt have to contain a link initiallly, maybe just a cool quote, but just make sure you put one up for future use.

Excellent tips, but you have to build 1,000's of links on a forum for it to do you any good. I recommend other means of building backlinks in addition to forum posts. That's why I primarily use my signature to push a product I really believe in rather than using it for some link juice.
