The meta description is very important. Most of the time its used by search engines to show the snippet next to your listing.
That's good advice for on-page optimisation. Anyone that follows that will have a well optimised site. As Mad4 says though, off-page factors are now a large part of SEO, maybe you could so a 'part 2'
I still suspect that Meta Tags doesnt help http://www.seochat.com/c/a/Search-Engine-Optimization-Help/Are-Meta-Tags-Extinct/ do visit that link..
Don't believe what you hear on seochat. Most of my pages are indexed in google with the meta tag used as the snippet. Would you consider starting an adwords campaign and letting google choose your ad text? No. Thats why you need meta description tags.
I always put title, keyword and description metas on the page. Apart from being good practice you do actually rank for some of the more obscure keyword terms used. Every little helps!
I've heard that MSN have started giving weight to META tags in their search engine rankings...but that may be just a rumour. I think the biggest factor is seperating style, code and content - the killer combination is XHTML and CSS: it leaves mostly content in the html file and so the content is easier for spiders to crawl. The rest of your tips are sound.
I agree. Google has been using the Meta Description Tag as the description below the link in the SERPs. It may not affect rankings but could be the deciding factor for someone clicking the link or not. Now I am just waiting for part B of the post. The part about Off Page optimization.
Exactly MattUK. Why overlook something that may help? The post is very general, so it is aptly titled "for beginners". I would hope beginners would do a little more research than working off one such list. Unless, of course, this is meant to be a series of lists adplus?
does "Put keywords in the alt tag of Image tag." really help? Could you use technique to hide keywords on a page? Would google think badely of this?
Google wil think badly of hiding keywords. Make your alt tags good for the users ie describe what the image is showing and you will be fine.
Yep, good for onsite optimization. Meta tags don't, as far as we know, hurt google rankings, and they may benefit (especially in other search engines and MSN), so you might as well add them. Google does not look down on adding alt tags to images. In fact, I believe it actually encourages this in it's webmaster guidelines (not 100% sure about that).
