Hi, I am thinking to start a free web hosting business. Is it easy to promote a free web hosting? My idea is to run google Adsense ads on member's sites to make money such as freewebs.com is doing. I want to know if it is a good idea to make money or not? Thanks in Advance! momi
There are already good free web hosts like 000webhost and many others. It is a very competitive market. And 000webhost has no ads even for free hosting.
It's good money but highly competitive though. If you are a beginner, I would not reccomend it as it is not quick money. Unless you have hundreds or thousands to invest, it will be a long and painful process that will require months of work before you'd get anywhere. Adsense pays around $0.25 CPM (based on my experience) so unless you have thousands of clients that get around millions of pageviews per day, you won't be earning much. But if you have a business mind, essentially you'll learn that ads are not the best way to go.
The word free is amazing good at cunning people into thinking all is free. If you're serious about making money then read this thread http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1252071
I too had the same idea long back and but I don't think its a good proposal as of date. If you understand what I mean to say, just visit ruchiedomains.info, photos.ruchiedomains.info, blog.ruchiedomains.info and worldmoneydirectory.com. You will notice those ads at the top. To be precise, we offer free blog, photo album, web hosting (10gb space, 300 gb traffic), site builder, email and more valued at $141 with every domain registration, transfer or renewal. And the domain cost can be be even $1.99 or more, it doesn't matters. So I don't think you will be able to compete the market so easily. Also, you will need a hosting account with SSH and root access to setup the advertisements which will be a costly affair. And I think these days, some people also offer free hosting without any ads on them. I am sorry if this disappoints you but you did a good thing by asking this question. Hope that helps your friend.
There are a lot of fly-by free hosting services on the web. The main challenge is to think out to differentiate from them.
Is risky to place Adsense on users pages, you don't own their content. I had a free host around 6 months and lost around 800 $ because i made mistakes. Full of russian spammers, phishing sites. Takes a lot of time to make money, you must have money to pay few years, min 2 years i think, to be known.
The market is way too saturated. Also, Adsense ad payoffs suck and you probably wouldn't be able to break even for a VERY long time as a startup.
I think, many people failed to earn any good amount of money with free hosting service. There are many reasons why. You may consider making some other site.
I will be more than happy to save your precious money. If you are looking for sincere advice, I am always there to share my experience.
BTW, would you be interested in starting your own private label web hosting company with just a invest of a domain name? And you just have to drive visitors to the site and the rest is handled by the company. See a live site at ruchiewebhosting.com
I was going to say something similar, though not from experience. A person would have to constantly monitor the content of the users to make sure that you weren't liable for broaching illegal topics.
Private label is mean that you buy a package from a company and sell its as you're own. Which mean you don't need to leased a server and maintain the server. All you need to do is do the promotion part.
There are various private label web hosting programs but the one that I am referring to is does not requires any investment. The domain name too is optional because you get a semi-branded URL. However, its always recommend that you use a domain name for better results. Just check my site ruchiewebhosting.com. Once you have your site up and running, you can submit it to search engines and promote it locally in your area. Don't try to run on the internet for advertising your site. Once you get local customers, you will start generating recurring revenues.
At this point and stage of the free hosting market, starting a new free web hosting service will be more passion than revenue. Not everything can be about money. You can not expect to make a quick buck in free web hosting, especially in this expanding market. If you want to become successful, you need two things: funds and passion. Without funds, you will not be able to pay for the server and offer good service. Without passion, you will never succeed.
