suppose you have a site abc.com and i have a site xyz.com. now, if i post a link of your site i.e. abc.com on my site then it will be a backlink for your site from my site. in other words, all the incoming links to your site are know as backlinks or inbound links

For google backlinks=Authority. No backlinks means no rankings in the serps. I have one cheap info domain that makes me over $300 a week. How? because its got a lot, and I mean a lot of backlinks for each keyword I target and I rank near the top or on the top of the first page of google for most of the keywords in this niche and thats with an info domain. Your basic strategy should be to to find your keywords. put up a lot of web 2.0 sites for that keyword. Get backlinks to those sites from social bookmarking, blogs etc then point these web 2.0 properties back to your main site. Thats the basics.
