I just bought a new domain and join a hosting company for it and they want an extra 12$ so they can transfer it is this fair?

p.s i dont have to transfer it in order to use with my hosting correct? im guessing the hosting company got the wrong idea by mistake.

The hosting company is simply offering a service to move the domain so it points to there servers for you or possibly have it managed by them and remove it from your current domain register. You would need to clarify which one obviously.

In most cases this is a good deal if you don't know what your doing :)

That said you can simply do the following,

    1) Login to your domain register control panel
    2) Switch name servers to the ones provided by your new hosting company

That's it really, DNS propogation can take anywhere up to 48hrs or more but once done your domain will point the name servers on the new hosting compaines servers.

If you transfer the domain, like transferring registrars, then $12 seems right, as it adds another year of registration to the domain.

I think what you are talking about is switching nameservers, and basically switching which host the domain points to. I'm thinking like you are that your hosting company misunderstood.
