If you do a proper or appropriate comment to the blogs then there are chances of getting quality backlink. Otherwise it would be considered as spamming act. Also excessive commenting is not good it can also ban your IP.
If the site has top commentator plugin installed and your comments are legitimate, they can get you a backlink from the blog homepage (temporarily). Nothing bad in commenting on multiple posts on a blog.
Blog commenting is one of the famous way to get backlinks. Try to collect list of sites if possible high PR dofollow blogs and comment on all their latest post. I'm sure some of the recent post will get high PR in next update which will eventually help ur PR too.
It's beneficial as long as your comments are published and considered not as spam. Any links (do follow or no follow) will still provide traffic in the long run.
If you post comments that contribute in conversation, it will be beneficial for backlink and traffic both, for sure.
