Is a subdomain with keywords just as good as a 'normal' domain? Because it's hard to explain what I'm trying to explain, here's a little example A: You have http://www.playdoh.com B: You have http://playdoh.ulululu.com Is B just as good for SEO as A? Is it a big difference? I hope someone understands what I'm trying to ask ^^'
If the keyword in the main domain name is related to the keyword in the subdomain, then it is definitely better than the main domain name alone. However if the main domain keyword is totally unrelated to the keyword in the subdomain, then it will definitely not help from the SEO point of view. In my opinion, it is always better to use a subdomain with relevant keywords to the main domain name in order to boost your search engine rankings.
How about a subdomain that completes a phrase. Like del.icio.us, or play.doh.com? Will that have a benefit a SEO benefit for the terms targeted?
I think the answer's NO because people would exploit the hell out of this and google are jerks but not idiots.
Well I want to know this because I'm planning to do a fan network. Imagine that you have the domain http://www.mfan.net, then you take http://jonasbrothersclub.mfan.net. Is that just as good as http://www.jonasbrothersclub.net? Also, do you think http://jonasbrothersclub.mfan.net is better than http://www.mfan.net/jonasbrothersclub
For the first paragraph, as I said in my first reply, NO. 2nd, I think that, yes, you are better off with a subdomain than a directory type url.
Well according to my common sense a subdomain should be preffered over a directory type url, at least that's what I think.
You are 100% correct. My site domainauctions.ruchie.com was ranked on the 1st page of yahoo search results and that too at position 5. Unfortunately, I had to drop the site for some reasons but I will be coming with it soon again.
I just worked out my idea and created Videogamefan, a network of video game fansites. I have for example: http://thesims3.vgfan.net http://wiisportsresort.vgfan.net Do you think I make a chance to rank high in Google for keywords like The Sims 3 and Wii Sports Resort?
^ Doubtful, those are all high competition. Well, maybe not wii sports with resort at the end, no clue what that is...
I've done the same type of sites before actually, not with subdomains but also with names of big titles of games in the URL. So far I can't complain with my Google ranking for those sites. Wii Sports Resort is a sequel to the first Wii Sports game
The domain and/or subdomain are just one tiny part of what earns you SE traffic. You can have a perfect domain and still be getting less traffic than someone with better content. Unless you're going for "type-in" traffic your content is what you should be most concerned with. Subdomains do have the slight advantage (on some SEs) to be considered separate sites. This means that with one domain and several subdomains from it, you can get more than a single search result block in SERPS (not that this is necessarily a good thing).
Subdomain certainly has their own SEO advantage..I've done stuff similar to .:YoUnGLinKiE:. and suprisingly you could take advantage of other domain name keywords..The effect of GPR is still unknown. I've done something like this: i. my initial domain name : xxx.com ii.Let's says I want to manipulate mangga fan website and take advantage its content keyword target. Then, I put my subdomain like this: manggafan.xxx.com manggafan keyword can push your xxx.com domain name in search result. However in CMS environment, adding another subdomain is pain in the ass. Well, back to the question of either B as good as A.. My personal opinion based on my experience is that : -B won't position higher than A.. -B advantage is that it use almost same keyword as A..B position in google page search won't be far that A
Hm thanks for the advice everyone! We'll see how it turns out with my subdomains, somewhere in November this year I'll create another thread and tell you how my subdomainsite is doing.
