    What is better for seo:
not obvious, not so straight generic top-level domain (gTLD) like theycallmepeter.com, or
straight country code top-level domain (ccTLD) like peter.cc?
    How do they effect seo?

    Those domains are just samples

It can help if you have the keywords you will target in the domain but generally speaking the tld will not make a difference. That said, there has some concerns that .99 domains are using by spammers.

I do believe that if you combine .co.uk with uk based hosting for example that it has a significant difference.

it depends on what are you targeting. if your target audience is in a particular country then go for ccTLD. this will help Google to show your results in that particular country. if you use gTLD then Google will get confused and will show thw results based on the address you have on contact page and the country and city name you are trying to target but using a ccTLD in this case is more effective
