I've never sold links or participated in a link exchange with this domain so I don't know why they would penalize the site. The domain only shows up for a search of domain.com in Live.com and Yahoo.com - Even if I search for the exact title tag (which is pretty specific and I rank #1 on Google for it) I don't rank on Live and Yahoo... so I'm sure there has to be some kind of penalty. But it's also true that they haven't entirely de-indexed it or anything. In fact over 6000 pages are indexed according to Yahoo Site Explorer with over 7000 external links coming in. So basically my question is WTF? Does anyone have any idea of why Yahoo! and MSN would be hating on my site? It's a really white hat site with loads of unique content and as I mentioned I don't link to anything that could be considered a "bad neighborhood."
don't worry about it...the only thing important is whether Google likes you or not...if Google is okay with you then don't worry about your rankings in Yahoo! and MSN...sooner or later they will give you your share
I disagree with you... Yes, Google is the most prioritize SE among the 3; but being banned in Yahoo and / or MSN still have a factor in your traffic and conversion aspect. My website was being banned in Yahoo for a year; my traffics and conversion really drop.
Exactly! It's difficult to rank well in all 3 search engines. If you had a choose, you'd pick G, and you have got that. So don't try and fix what ain't broken.
okay i agree...the traffic may drop but my point is that traffic on Live and Yahoo! is fast dropping. Google is swiftly gaining the market share. moreover, if Google is by your side i don't see any reason for the other two search engines penalizing the site
It actually appears I was wrong about MSN. It's only Yahoo! penalizing the site. I've actually asked Yahoo! for reinclusion. I'll see how it goes and report back. And yes I agree that it's better to have this problem then the other way around (ranking in Yahoo but not in Google) but Yahoo brings in enough traffic that I still consider it important. And the thing is, there's no reason for it to be penalized - so it's a bit of a "head scratcher" - I just want to figure it out. One more thing: While MSN & Yahoo may not bring in as much traffic as Google - I find that the traffic they do bring in is actually of higher quality (IE: higher conversion rates.)
I can't believe that people who call themselves seo's actually tell people to not worry about not getting traffic from MSN or Yahoo. Who in their right mind would ignore 15 - 25% of their potential traffic? That is just craziness. Who would want to rely on just one source for nearly all their traffic? As far as I know MSN & Yahoo do not penalize websites for things like buying/selling links or exchanging links. More likely your websites are just not as well optimized for those search engines. Each search engine has their own algorithm for ranking websites. With Google it is all about getting links from quality websites. MSN & Yahoo on the other hand seem to care more about link volume, including internal links. So to rank well of those search engines you often need much more links than you would on Google. You need lots of links with good anchor text and good onpage optimization. If you tell us your website url we might be able to pinpoint the problem.
Thanks for that. The whole "Google is all that matters" attitude gets old fast. I don't get it. Yes Google is the big dog. But Yahoo & MSN (and in particular Yahoo) bring in enough traffic that they are a real concern for sure. I don't want to share the URL - I'm a little paranoid about associating myself as internet marketer with websites like this. I will say that it's a music blog. And it's not a site that just promotes products all of the time. In fact I almost never do that. It's real content either written by me or some other folks I know online. These are people who are writing out of the love for the subject too. This isn't just BS created for search engines. What I'm getting at is, this is a real site. Seriously! That's what's so annoying about it being penalized. The only thing I can think of that may be an issue is that it has a decent amount of adsense blocks on it. But it's definitely not a "made for adsense" type site. The content is above the ads. My adsense ctr is quite low (lower than 1%.) As far as not having enough links back to rank in Yahoo... I just don't believe it. I don't even rank for a search of Domain (without the .com) in Yahoo.com - this is not a competitive term at all (no money in it.) My site ranks #177 for this search and the result that shows up is one of my "tags" (not the homepage.) Almost all of the pages that rank ahead of it are articles and other things that link back to my site (most of them don't even have the term in the title, my site does (along with it being the domain obviously.) Like I said I've got over 7000 backlinks in Yahoo Site Explorer. That's not it. This is definitely a penalty. I think I'm being penalized for something on page... but I don't know what it could be. One theory I have is that it's because I include YouTube videos at the end of almost every blog post (an embedded video of something related to the post.) ?? I'm just grasping at straws though.
Sometimes it's very hard to figure out what will please Yahoo...other than shelling out money to be manually included in their directory. Try getting some links back to your site from yahooanswers......then Yahoo might like you a little better and start to see you as more relevant for your keywords. And MSN is all over the place. I find that if I build my sites to please Google, eventually I get Yahoo and Msn traffic, but it usually takes several months vs. getting traffic from Google within a week at most. Dan
It seems a total confusion over your site. Since, the Google doesn't rise any concern no need to bother about yahoo and msn. They will also be on your side.
*sigh* I would recommend looking into something called "reading comprehension" but I think it's quite obvious you didn't read anything before making your comment.
I run a blog with 20,000 unique visitors a day and 70% is Google traffic, 5% is Yahoo/MSN etc so no need to worry, just concentrate on Google
