can anybody tell me that the external links of my website which i found in google webmaster tool are all dofollow. If all are dofollow then why many nofollow sites are found in those external backlinks given by google webmaster tool.

So please tell me is this helpful or not ?

That is a very good question - one I have been deliberating on for a while. . .

In theory, nofollow links shouldn't show up in Webmaster Tools, so either:

    1) Most Likely: They show up as links in Webmaster Tools, but Google doesn't pass any PageRank along with them. In other words - those links won't affect your rankings.

I imagine this to be the case as Webmaster Tools isn't just an SEO tool for finding PR juicy links (Google doesn't want people manipulating that anyway), but rather a tool for seeing all the pages/sites that link to you in order for you to manage your reputation...etc. That information is still valuable to non-SEOs, and it would make sense for Google to provide that information.

When a link is nofollowed, it doesn't mean that Google completely ignores it, just that it won't pass any PageRank & affect the SERPS.

    2) Unlikely: Nofollow is just a guise and in fact all links pass PR (even if slightly dampened). Who knows why they would do this? PR (public relations)?

If youa re looking to categorize whether your back links are dofollow or nofollow, then google web master tools is the wrong place to look for it because it shows all backlinks that it finds and leaves out many others. You want to search for some custom software package that shows back links whether do follow or no follow.

I came up with a plausible theory about GWT "External Links"

Even though Google doesn't pass Page Rank from pages with the "Rel=NoFollow" tags.........there is a reason Google is counting the No Follows:

Google Bots crawl ALL of the links, looking for Anchor Text.

Just because a link is No Follow, doesn't mean that it doesn't enter into the overall CONTENT EVALUATION that Google Crawlers are conducting (on site and off site)

"What Googlebot sees" ---- they compare your link's anchor text to the content on your site.

ALL LINKS ARE EVALUATED BY GOOGLE FOR RELEVANCY.

For example, I have links from "Yelp.com" that are no-follow.

Yet the links come from pages that have words like "Wedding," "Disc Jockeys" and "DJs"

GWT counts that no follow link from Yelp.com in my External Link Count.

    Interesting thoughts @DJMC!

I have been trying to get as many brand mentions (within reason) into external content as possible for some time now (not links, just the brand name) as I had a gut feeling they would still count towards something, if not now - at some point in the future.

I suppose it makes sense that if Google knows the keyword density of every page it crawls, it also knows how many times 'Sacramento Weddings' is mentioned & uses this to measure popularity/buzz. . .

I don't claim to know all the answers, but it seems likely that Google is a lot smarter than we all give them credit for!

Remember, getting no follow backlinks as well as do follow is always a good idea. Especially if you're commenting on a popular no follow blog or forum related to your keywords. You'll get physical traffic from people checking out your sig file. So no follow links are important to pursue in a strategic way, even if Google doesn't count them into the equation when assessing your page rank.

Also I personally dislike only seeking backlinks from highly relevant pages because it's not organic at all. If you post an article at your site and people all across the net make it popular, linking back to you, not all of their sites are going to be using the same keywords as you do . THey might not even be in the same niche. It's organic and natural for people to link out to all kinds of content. So if you ONLY have links that are 100% highly optimized for your keywords this doesn't look natural in Google's eyes at all.

So I'm just saying - remember to mix things up a bit - seeking no follow links from time to time and also links from sites that might not be entirely relevant to your keywords. It will give your site a more organic appearance.
