I am having trouble making a decision about a website I am currently designing.

    Think Big (Option #1):
    -Buy a premium template
-Pay for a custom designed logo
    -Pay for good content
-Add a forum to the website
-Aim for a dedicated visitor base

    Focus Small (Option #2):
    -Use a free template
    -Create a logo myself
    -Fewer pages
    -Have quality focused content
    -Aim for search engine traffic

Which will get me a better return on my investment? Thanks for the help.

    Regards,
    Tulumbo

Here's an interesting exerpt from Trumps book:

Do You Have What It Takes?

People always ask me, "How did you get so rich?" The way I do things has allowed me to succeed financially far beyond what I had expected. I have had a lot of fun, and I have made a lot of money. I have known many celebrities, billionaire businesspeople, and superstar sports figures. It is not easy to explain in a couple of words, but I have noticed that all these successful people have traits that set them apart from the pack: their attitudes, actions, persistence, and passion, plus a whole slew of other qualities that separate the winners from the losers.

To be successful you have to separate yourself from 98 percent of the rest of the world. Sure, you can get into that special 2 percent at the top, and it is not just by being smart, working hard, and investing wisely. There is a formula, a recipe for success that the top 2 percent live by and that you too can follow to be successful.

First, you must be honest with yourself. The only way to get rich is to be realistic and brutally honest. You have to get out of the ideal fantasy world you read about in magazines and see on TV. It is not as easy as they make it look. It is tough, and people get hurt. So you have to be as tough as nails and willing to kick ass if you want to win. Most people are not cut out for this. You have to deal with a tremendous amount of pressure. You have to think large and be creative to solve big problems that scare the crap out of most people. People are going to try to steal from you and destroy you just for the fun of it. You have to stand up to them, fight back and kick their ass. Nobody is going to hold your hand and help you along. You are on your own. You have to be able to bend but never break.

All of the greats in every sport, in finance and business, in the arts, and in government possess something special. A lot of people have it, but frankly, most people do not. Do you have what it takes to think big and kick ass? Virtually all self-made millionaires and billionaires, such as Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, and Walt Disney had the ability to think big and kick ass.

The only problem with "think big" is that often my big ideas just done work out and I end up wasting money.

It is totally depend on your budgets and how well you know the market is. If you just started, better go for option #2 first. After you get use with it and see money coming, then you can opt for option #1.

Just remember, all the big gun out there like Google and Microsoft, they start small first and went big later on.

I always think big, but sometimes i do it on the cheap and wait for the traffic and orders to come in. Then once the site is ranking well in google, I spend money and make the site look great. I came up with a great idea the other day, and in stead of spending 10k starting it, I'm going to spend about 2k. Then when it starts to take off and money comes in, I will reinvest all of that and make the site really great. Think big, but bootstrapp at the begining.

Thinking big is the right way to go, cause if you will start from small base, after certain amount of time, you'll fee that now its time to upgrade,
than if u have to do the same thing later on, than why not now?

Think BIG first ,and then Split the target to smaller piece and focus on each small piece ,one by one ,one after another.so that you build regular perfections from the process, the process take time yes it it true, however this time you invest here,is what think can make your overall result benefit "more strength than Instant process never could do

Hmm, you gotta think big AND focus small.

Have big goals but take baby steps. I think from your options, you gotta aim for #1, but start with #2.

Depends on your finance and the risk you are willing to take.

If you have the cash, go for premium if you truely believe in your idea.

But if not, start off small and build up.

Well. let's look at this objectively. How do CEO's do it? Do they think small? do they try to make logos themself and use free templates? or do they have a BIG VISION and then outsource everything? :)

Go for the Option 1 although it involve a lot of initial investment.
You will recover the initial start up easily.
Beside that,by having premium website you can easily drive people to your site coz they have attracted by your site design and feature rich function.

Content is more important then some pretty design. Web designers will have you believe otherwise :D
