Hi all.. Looking for feedback from any webmaster and any football/soccer fans.. Am running a Soccer Blog called Goalpost.tv ( www.goalpost.tv ) and would like to know if you think there is too much on Home page. I got it listed in DMOZ 2 weeks after Launch and a PR2 about 3 weeks in... Building up now and have great content written by great Sports Journalists. Im trying to get the balance right information/ads... Any feedback/ideas apreciated.... Cheers!
That's quite a bunch on your homepage... There's nothing actually wrong with it, however you have to consider the fact that the first 600 pixels are what people are going to see upon loading your site. That's why many Ad Agencies ask you to place thier ads within the first 600 pixels of your site. It's quite alright to have content on a second screen-length on your homepage, but most people don't bother looking at the bottom half of 3 and 4 screen-length pages.
That's not even close to having too much info on it. Why are you doubting yourself on this? It needs to be put together better, but, no, it is not too much info.
Thanks guys.. Zaccaria - I agree with the whole 600px thing regarding ads.. am not so worries about ads right now , more so visitors.. Perry.. can you tell me what you mean by "put together better" ? Thanks!
Yeah dude ALOT of info on there, I don't really know where to begin looking. I would move the In The Papers section up in place of that big adsense blog. Also Best Goals too, if people haven't got the plugin to be able to view that player it's just wasted space. The google Ads at the top block your logo too. Apart from that looks pretty good, might want to ease off the ads
I don't know if you got replies elsewhere, but if you have had people saying that it is too much info, they are not readers. They are lazy. They probably don't even read the newspaper. heh Do you really care what THEY think? You want serious readers, the ones who like such sites as yours. Does Yahoo have too much info on their page? Do such successful news sites have too much on their page? Does DrudgeReport, a site with millions of repeat readers, have too much info? Nope. Only the lazy don't go to such sites, so it doesn't matter what they say. heh, I know children who read more. Your site does not have too much info. Shit, not even close. But it needs to be put together better. The video near the top isn't playing. You have a lot of space on the right side. It just does not look right. Near the bottom it is on both sides. Good luck with it.
that maybe so... But you want to appeal to all classes, even the lazy ones. So finding a solution that's fit for everyone would be best. Perhaps combining both of our suggestions would make his homepage better than anyone would expect. What do you think?
1. Put your logo on top, and the menubar underneath 2. Reduce the number of elements; it's 2 columns on the top and 3 columns underneath. 3. Remove the 3-column part and make the whole page 2 columns. For example, you have "live scores" in the menu, but it's also a columns underneath. In short, simplify it. You could go with 3 columns, but then remove the 2 columns on the top. But it's a nice looking site, and the content looks good. Tobias
Another good suggestion... Tom Thumb, take these suggestions, as they are very good advice and it'll improve your homepage significantly.
