You could also try livejournal.com. I would reitterate what @mitz said though - Google just love WordPress (it's all about the tag pages).
Why not get a cheap reseller hosting account, with fantastico, then you can buy some cheap domains, setup wordpress on them. Much more control over plugins etc...
True - but if it's PageRank you're after, wordpress.com is quicker and easier. If you want something long-term then go with self-hosted, if you want a quick buck, go with wordpress.com.

go for the free wp blog, it ranks well and quickly, if yoiu are the first to use a tag you become the featured blog, your posts will be indexed within an hour you also get free publicity there
I don't see why you would want to choose something other than Blogger and WordPress. They are the best and most famous. Try Blogger if you want it to be easy and simple. If you have experience and want more options then go with WP.
