Hi all I have noticed recently that altering stopwords in a multi-word keyword affects Google results. For instance, if i search for to increase weight for increase weight at increase the weight how increase a weight (all words but "increase" and "weight" being stopwords) I get different results every time. While, according to the concept of the stopwords, I should be getting same results. Note that in Yahoo I am getting same results for such queries. So here's the question - are there still stopwords for Google? Any thoughts?
dzi, I have noticed a similar thing with the term "in". Hotels London and Hotels in London return different results. I would explain this on the basis that the "in" could be material to the search.
Yes, but it wasn't (shouldn't be?) like that... "IN" would appear in ANY stopword list, for instance http://www.lextek.com/manuals/onix/stopwords1.html or even http://www.ranks.nl/resources/stopwords.html

thanks for the awesome info and for the lovely link to your blog. Did you read my question? I am asking if you know anything about the fact that stopwords have started influencing SERPs in Google recently. Read the thread again, please. It actually says that "a, the, in" etc. are not used as stopwords anymore.
Actually you could see these results for quite a long time already. Yeap, Google stopped using stop-words, and many professional SEOs have been writing abiut this in their blogs. AFAIK, now it's a common approach to think that Google removed stop-words for English language, but my personal experience shows that in some other languages (like Portugese, Norwegian, etc) some stop-words still exist. So, as we see, Google's trying to improve its search every day, but still can't afford doing this for all languages (though I'm sure that pretty soon stop-words will be totally removed from all major SEs) Just my $0.02
Well I entered niche marketing so recently that there never have been stop words to think about in my keyword research. I only know Google as Google is now, such that Hotels in London do give slightly different results than London Hotels. This is to our advantage as well as Google's. The competitors in top positions for hotels in London might be easier to compete against than the competitors in top slot for London hotels. So you would then do most anchoring for hotels in London. (this is just an example...I haven't actually checked).
