I think they simply convert alexa ranking into amount of visits (estimates)
there is no concrete method to do so but the things other members have suggested here are sufficient to give you an idea about the popularity of it
These tools only provide you a rough stat on the basis of their algorithm. If you check the traffic from all these tools, you will find the difference. Alexa is one where you can rely on at some level, however, alexa rankings could also be manipulated...

Alexa, google trends, some times websites have chat boxes by which you can estimate no of visits they get. also the widgets like no of online visitors also leak info about their traffic
I don't think is there any tools for find the traffic details of competitors.. If it is there, the results should not be accurate.
