I think this is just plain wrong

This Web firm owner accidentlly lost his domain and now a member is trying to sell it to him,

I think the new owner should just be nice and give it back

What does everyone else think

People resell expired domains all the time. How hard is it to renew a domain

 

Can't see any evidence of 'blackmailing'.

If the guy is now the rightful owner, I guess he can do with it what he wants. Though the former owner can probably claim it back, with a fair bit of hassle, based on trademark etc. law.

I agree with that, it is easy to renew a domain, but supossily this company / person had someone else in charge of that,

It just sucks and I feel bad cause the guy is still in biz

 

Hello, I am the owner of the web firm (VBWEBSITES). I started my business in late 2002 and depend on this to provide for my family. I also have two employees that have families that depend on this business.

We made a huge mistake with the domain as another company handled this domain for me as there are sites out there that pointed to ns1.vbwebsites.com, etc. I have had to go and redirect all those domains, etc.. So clients are all ok. Now I am stuck in a bad position. My business is all I have to support myself and my children. I could go to everyone of my sites and change all those links that pointed to .com to now point to my .net or another name but would hate to lose all those years. I mirrored .com site to vbwebsites.net.

I hope that the gentleman will work with me and be a true gentleman. One Good Turn deserves another and Carma. I live by this.

To top this off, I am going through a messy divorce, fighting for custody, selling our marital home and hitting rock bottom. I am finally after 5 months of mental anguish back in a working mode not letting the troubles of life get me down. This has been a devastating year and huge blow to my family. Keep getting kicked when I am down but I hold my head high.

You snooze, you lose. If your business is worth something, so is your domain. Just like protecting other assets, a domain name should be on top of the list. If your memory is bad, just reg it for 10 years and tell all your friends to remind you to reregister then

 

It sucks indeed but hey, welcome to life. That's no reason the new owner is obliged to do whatever. When you cock up, you generally get to pay for it. What do you expect?

At least a lesson will have been learned... No matter what the outcome will be.

I agree it sucks and the extra nice thing for the new owner to do would be to give it back.....I just don't thing its "Just plain wrong" nor do I think its blackmail.

I don't get why this warranted a brand new thread when it already had one. Kudos to Sara for notifying the original owner but I don't see how the new owner is as bad as people are making him out to be.

 

Agreed he is not obligated, just think it would be nice.....

If you are asking in general, if it was me that lost the domain I would be absolutely kicking myself although Im not sure I would sue the person that registered it...I can tell you one thing though. I would never forget to renew my domains

That's a tought situation, you can't really fault the guy who was selling the domain though. It was, afterall, up for grabs.

But, in the original owners case, having a registered business name pretty much gives him a trademark over the domain as far as I know.

Hopefully they worked it out amicably without having to go through any hoops on either end. Best of luck to both parties, and let this serve as a reminder of the importance of keeping your domains registered and reading the half dozen emails you get sent before a domain goes back on the block.

 

And usually they dont even make it publicly available for 15 -30 days after experation,

Most registrars have that "hold or pending " stage

 

This all reminds me of this recent Digg story about CouchSurfing.com who cocked up their entire database and backups with it. They pulled the plug on their operation though now it seems they're planning to get back in action:

I will say however, fair play to a guy who's whole livelyhood rests on 75 visitors a day. It must have had a massive conversion rate.
