How to convert VOB to FLV, AVI, MP4

Discussion in 'Graphics & Multimedia' started by thesamemanhal, Feb 22, 2009.

I need to convert DVD file formats (VOB) to flash formats FLV, AVI, and/or MP4 but the most important thing for me would be the file size as I would like to keep it small as much as possible with reasonably good video quality.
I have already purchased ImTOO FLV Converter V5.2 but I am not very happy with it as it generates really large files.

Looking for suggestions for any other tool (paid or free), any idea or recommendations?

you could.....always use...... Flash Video Encoder, by Adobe to make an FLV.

*HONESTLY* what is it with people on this forum and recommending software other than Adobe's for a proprietary format that only Adobe fully supports? I can understand mentioning alternatives, but there's not even a single mention of Adobe's actual software here!

Obviously when you get Flash there's a way to encode video without purchasing or downloading additional software.

As for AVI, I haven't the slightest clue why anybody would desire to encode into such an old and bloated format. This isn't 1993 anymore, programmers haven't been asleep. We have better video encoding formats now, like H264 that have fully capable free encoders like x264. Use it when you make your mp4.

I suggest you really look into video encoding and the differences and advantages between the different formats before you save another video. I tend to use h264 mp4's in .MOV container, at 1280x720 resolution, because Youtube will keep these the best quality it can and it looks really good.

Find the right format and resolution for what you're trying to do...

Riva FLV encoder is a great free alternative to Adobes own software, but you may have to use it in conjunction with Super to juggle the input file formats. Super is my favorite video encoder, simple, fast and deals with almost every format going. Riva gives you a 'target output' to keep the file size in check.

If your looking for a quality FLV your going to need something with a good VP6 encoding engine, most free encoders don't have VP6 and use the older H263, sorenson squeeze format which is no where near as good.

Pretty much the best around is one of the tools made by ON2, we use Flix Exporter at work. Having designed the VP6 format they know the format inside out.

If your spending money on a good general video converter I would recommend Procoder, costs around $500 but its pretty good, although it looks like there is an express version thats around $60 no idea what its like though. We use its big brother Carbon Coder where I work, and I swear by it. Although its VP6 isn't as good as ON2's.

If your doing H264, look for a good x264 implementation, x264 is a very good free implementation of H264.

I know Leawo has a free FLV Converter, nice software. Actually, it's not only a FLV Converter, because when I try it, I find it can output most of video formats just like MP4, AVI, FLV and so on.
If you are interested in it, you can get it in it's official website: http://www.leawo.com/flv-converter/
