    Hello Folks,

    I am planning to develop a forum and would like to know from experienced people here what software to use and how to proceed with the development project.

    Thanks all,

    Dhook

    Personally, I think MyBB is the best of the free ones:
    http://www.mybboard.net/

    Great admin interface, and good support.

    If you have money to invest, than there is nothing better than Vbulletin.

    if you want free:
    try MyBB

    Custom Pages plugin
    Plugins easy to install
    Easy to learn to modify the PHP in templates and use variables
    Great framework to learn how to write code
    Themes and CSS easy to modify
    Overall very intuitive
    New task manager
    MyBB 1.4 was a huge upgrade
    New moderator Control Panel
    Tested for security by a top professional company
    Fast and light
    Cool new editor
    Choice of points system plugins
    Auto add members to a new usergroup based on several variables
    Free!!

    ~~~~~
    ps. If MyBB was installed by Fantastico it would be the runaway #1 free forum.
    Thanks to everybody, now it seems the choices are
    1) VBulletin
    2) phpBB3
    3) myBB
    can we have a sort of comparison of these 3 softwares, gemini's post has a good amount of details for myBB.
    What do you think ladies and gentlemen about the above 3 softwares?
    Thanks again,
    Dhook
    I'd go with myBB. phpBB3 has a great template but lacks other features that myBB has. Since both are free, you can consider trying them out.
    You've got to pay for Vbulletin though.
    I'll PM you a link. Or go to the MyBB support forum and follow peoples sigs.
    A lot of us replace the searchable (c) MyBB with an image so that we're NOT found on Googs :D
