I've seen a few people giving the advice that you should stick to the same anchor text and that you'll get a good PR in Google for that search result. Just wondering what would happen if you were happy with your position for your chosen keyword/s and from then onwards started using a different anchor text. i.e. if you had loads of high PR inbound links and 50% of them had anchor text 1, and the other 50% had anchor text 2, would you rank high for both these keywords? I know there are other aspects like time etc but just wondering if having different anchor texts dilutes the effect of getting good PR or anything, thanks.
If I would rank high for the first keyword I would go for second one, and then third etc. Why not. You can get better rankings and higher traffic in that way.
For the keywords I already have at #1, I continue to get some backlinks using that same anchor text. Basically just enough to keep them at #1. I work at getting new backlinks with the anchor text of keywords currently sitting at #2 to #10. Those are the keywords I target as link anchor text in an effort to get them ranking higher on page 1.
lol this has to be the best thing I have heard in the long while since that guy who decided to add a dictionary to his keyword meta tags. Always mix and match your anchor. People don't naturally link to sites with the same anchor, Make it look natural. Eg if you are targeting keyword "car" mix it up eg. "fast cars" "great car" "look at this cool car" etc. Secondly PR and SERPs are different things. When optimizing a keyword (Trying to make it appear higher in SERPs) you are not trying to boost your PR. PR naturally follows as a result of link building. If you want PR just fake it or link back to your website from some PR7 page with any old anchor you like and you will get it. This will do jack shit for your traffic though.
Its been my observation that you can "dilute" your rankings by using too many different keywords. You can't have your cake and eat it too. If you want to rank well for a different keyword it might cost you the ranking of your previous ones you were targeting. You have to find a happy balance between using multiple keywords so you rank well for all of them, but not at the cost of losing your best ones.
And what about all those people who optimize their squidoo lenses for example to rank for hundreds of thousands of different keywords? Somehow they manage to achieve what they want without compromising the others on the same domain. Its just when people switch from one keyword to another they never get to finish any of them properly.
I'm aware of the fact that they're different things even though I screwed up with that first post, but the two are obviously related. If PR is Googles view of how important that page is for a certain niche/keyword then it must be related to how high you appear in the search results unless you're in a competitive niche - in which case a high PR will do like you said, jack shit for traffic.
PR, as I have learned over a couple of years, has absolutely no influence on anything. It's purely a novelty. Heck, half of my sites outrank others sites that have PR4+, while mine have PR0. In the beginning, I would focus on ranking well for your main keyword, then start to dance around that main keyword and hit other ones similar to the main one.
I'm talking about per each page not for an entire domain. No one discusses an entire domain when talking about anchor text. Your talking about something completely different. When you start focusing your efforts to different keywords on a particular page you start losing rank on your main ones for that page. You can't rank high for many MAJOR keywords on the same page. You have to pick and choose. Google figures out which ones your emphasizing the most and gives them the best rank.
Mix it up is best...of course get more anchor text for your target keywords is key...but generally to look natural, you need some on your brand too!
The trick is to target 2 or 3 major keywords and many less competitive keywords for a page. It helps if those keyword phrases have overlapping words. This makes your anchor text look natural and works well to dominate a wide range of keywords. Plus you get some of those less competitive rankings earlier to start getting traffic sooner. You don't want to get too high a percentage for a certain phrase or you could get an over-optimization penalty.
A best practice is to always alter Anchor Text while building Backlinks ... because Google never recommend building backlinks !
I've been using the same anchor text for over a year. My signature KW are virtually the same everywhere. If you build gradually, there will not be a problem with Google.
Try to use variations of key keywords (key keywords? lol.) across various high PR pages. I agree with those above who've emphasized that it is best for your linking strategies appear natural.
