We are trying to reduce our carbon footprint at work by switching off computer monitors when we leave our desks. One of my colleagues has said that it takes more energy to keep switching them on and off for short periods than to leave them on all the time. Does anyone know if this is right?
I heard that the monitor takes a lot of power when switch on. I download a lot. So what I do is, I switch off my monitor when I don't use it and left the cpu on for download.
Its not good for monitor to be switch on and off constantly. So if you break a monitor while doing so you will end up droping more emissions in air than the hole office will spare in one year. But to shut them of over the night thats a nice solution.
better solution: don't use the power switch, set it to turn of the monitor power after a couple of minutes of inactivity in Power Options, THAT would save more electricity
If they are TFT screens then they use little power when on or off, but yes you should switch them off and no it does not use more power switching them off and on (obvisouly if you are switching them on and off constantly then it will) There is a power surge when they are switched on, but this is not comparable to them being on or on stand by all night. Food for thought: http://peaksci.com/blog/2008/08/turn_off_your_monitor.html
They're TFTs and we're talking about switching off for short periods of around 15 minutes, or even just switching off when you go for a comfort break. We have a very large number of computers in our organisation so any change will make a difference.
If your PC is ON all night or for more than an our without anyone using it, then turning OFF the monitor is the BEST option, and if you plan on NOT using it, a standby/hibernate option would be great. This applies to both CRT's and LCDs. Turning on a monitor cosumes quite a large amount.
turn down the PC instead of turning off the monitor ! i always shut down my PC at work ,nd if i am leaving late i make sure my colleagues also have turned their PC off
Well, i prefer to hibernate my computer when at times i need to leave it for quite a while. It does save more energy and less damage for the monitor. I once experience an error when I turned on my computer telling there's something wrong with the digital connection. I thought it was caused by the constant turning on and off of the monitor but when I pressed the "Power" button again, and restart, it gets back to normal. Switching off the monitor whether you're using either an LCD or a CRT will just save you quite amount but when completely hibernated (especially during office break) chances are, your company can save a lot depending on the number of units you have at your office.
Watch this video - http://www.sustainlane.com/reviews/...ulb-energy-myths/2IXDCB3S72RNY2NAFJT87HQ72U9S "Proof that turning off your lights is ALWAYS cheaper." I'd take that for any electrical item.
i agree with korrupt point as i have been using the steps since last 5 years and it has given a great result
I believe in "power saved is power generated". I have set my computer settings in such a way that after 5 minutes of inactivity, the monitor switches off automatically. I switch off the lights and fans whenever I leave the room.
