Sitepoint is playing a word game now. They no no longer call it "money" but "Marketplace Credits". Instead of $10.00 to place your ad to advertise your services on the forum, you just need 10 marketplace points. Oh, by the way, 10 "Marketplace Credits" costs . . . guess how much? That's right, $10.00. My question is: Is this kind of psychological word play actually going to work? It seems to me that pricing 1 cent lower is a more powerful psychological pricing technique than this. We all know that when you go to a casino you are more susceptible to spend "chips" than real money. But an internet forum is hardly comparable to the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas. What do you guys think about this? http://www.sitepoint.com/marketplace/addlisting.php?categoryid=20 Create New Listing Welcome to the SitePoint Marketplace! In order to create your listing, you will need 10 Marketplace Credits. Credits cost $1 each. You currently have 0 Credits. When you have purchased 10 credits, you will be able to return here and create your listing. Code (markup):
There is not telling what might come of this. It's good to try new things.. On the other hand it's just an extra step... Why mess with a good thing, right?
I think they should just let people post for free and accept that their cash cow is obviously the people clicking on the ads and their other services. This one should be free. But this has been beat to death in another thread, so I will digress. Just interested in why they changed it.
I think they changed it so that they can hold contests and have the prize be marketplace credits. Then again, I don't see a lot of contests from them.
You missed the point of the credits. Before if you paid for a listing the Sell Your Site forum but then decided you wanted to sell sites in the Sell Your Turnkey Sites forum you had to pay for another listing in that forum and ask for a refund for your other purchase. Now the credits you purchase can be used anywhere in the MarketPlace. So they're not playing a word game but instead improving the services they offer their members.
