http://www.blogspot.com powered by Google's Blogger is good. Its without any ads and you can also monetize it using adwords. You can also try wordpress.com for free wordpress hosting.
If you are a newbie then you should probably start with blogger.com or wordpress.com but the later does not support putting your own ads If you have your own hosting account then you can download wordpress (wordpress.org) and install it on your server (its not that hard)
Try out any of those suggest above and make yourself familiar with the workings. Both of them are quite user friendly.
