link:xxxxx.com vs. google webmasters

    Hello fellow DP'ers

    I have a question:
For all of my websites, when I look in google webmasters, I get a certain amount of backlinks (i.e. 5000+). However, when I search link:domain in google, only very small part (i.e. 20) of them show up in the search results.

What is special about those that do show up? are these the "good" ones and all the rest worthless?

    Any info would be appereciated.

It's normal and the link: command hasn't worked for years

    Hello Chaos,

Could you please let me know in what section of your webmaster account, you checked your website backlinks?? As far as I know, there is no section in Google webmaster account, that shows exact number of backlinks, however, you can check backlinks in Statistics-> index stats section by clicking on link: operator...:)

Its just that Google is trying to stop seo's to get other websites data as its the common and effective practice among seo's to do competitor link analysis

I think you have some confusion in term back links. There is no links: command, it is link: and it is used to check Google back links if searching in Google link:www.domain.com.

However, Pages with external links shows the pages and number of external links lying on those pages pointing to other sites..:)
