Is Blog Commenting for SEO a waste of time?

Even if the blog is a high PR do-follow blog, do you think that Google and other SE's pass PR from blog comments?

If they could, Google would devalue comment links, as they are too easily manipulated. The question is, can Google distinguish comment links from webmaster-placed links?

I would tend to think that they can. They can use surrounding text like "Comments", "Responses", the date or even the source code as an indicator that this is a low-value comment link.

Yes it is true, Google does not give much value to the blog comment, but in fact Google gives much value to the links in between the blog post. One thing more the basic criteria for getting the value in Google is it looks like natural link.

A few days back I chose one keyword with around 30K competitors in Google and then chose one brand new website, and I write one blog post on my blog and linked that keyword to the inner page of the new website. I was surprised to see that on the next day only the new site is coming at the very first page of the Google search. It assured me about the quality of the value of a blog post in my blog too, and it reflects the same concept for which Maximizationator was asking for.

Each page has its own back link so you aren't getting the homepage pr link that you are expecting.

I don't think that Google could distinguish between the two.

I would happy to have links back from the content of blogs not the comments links with anchor text

Blog commenting can bring valuable backlinks, although the trick is to get your link towards the top so that it is indexed first. Google isn't as capable of distinguishing comment links as some people might think.

    Hi there,

It is true that most blog comments are nofollowed, although there is a growing movement of people who are taking that out, either for everyone or just for regular commenters.

I think another benefit of commenting is that the other blogger can get to know who you are - especially people who don't get tons and tons of comments. Sometimes other readers will get to know who you are too, especially if theys ee your name on other blogs they read on the topic too. All of this means that commenting is good for building your reputation and spreading the word about you. If people get to know you they might visit your site and even link back to you or social bookmark your articles.

even a 'nofollow' has value. Direct traffic, other search engines, screwups in the google algo...

blog commenting done right can be a very powerful tool. Unfortunately, posting 'Great Blog! Keep it up!" doesn't really count as 'commenting done right'. Which is what a lot of people seem to think.

I agree with you. Blog commenting is the good way to bring some valuable links. They should be dofollow and relavancy is must.

i tend to agree with this, good comments on good blogs will help, but as others have said, it shouldn't be your whole linkbuilding strategy

blog comments do get you some good links, but they are very few and far between! You could waste many hours commenting on blogs and 75% might not even get approved!

the ones that do get approved, you might be looking at another 55-65% are nofollow blogs, 5% are unlikely to get cached in the next week, and the rest might be good links.

Your time is much better spent looking for really really high quality links rather than the blog comments, if the blog is related try and just email the blog owner asking for a link in the blogroll, or incontent

It is not waste of time per se, because if the links are do follow and the blog is good content and has high PR then you get the backlinks. I dont think Google distinguishes between links found in comments from other links on the same page. In any case, human visitors are likely to become more familiar with your URL when they see it as part of blog comments

Like many people who have replied to this thread, I thought comment links are useless, but I have been commenting on relevant blogs for some time and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's an excellent way to improve SERPs.

i think it can help not just "too much" but it can, especially if it is done properly.
