Need help - RAM?

One of my friend has installed 4 2GB RAM in his new bought system. He uses Vista. But when checked in properties(by right clicking the computer), it detected only 3.25GB RAM. Even XP does the same. So the remaining is not detected.

I just wanted to know whether only 3.25GB of RAM works or 8GB RAM works but only 3.25GB is detected? So is there any way to detect the total working of RAM?

He need to use Vista 64-bit version to use all the 8GB of RAM. 32-bit version will only detect 4GB of RAM minus some memory that is needed by other device like graphic card.

Dynashox has hit the nail on the head. And then you may not be able to find 64 bit drivers for your software.

Keep 2 and sell 2 is your best option.
