I am new to for profit webdesign. I have had some experience with forums and general pages for friends and family.

When a page is a LAnding page, what are some general ideas or guidelines for it.
Should it be a blog or a specific domain site?

Just looking for advice or maybe some examples of what will or won't work. I realize that it will depend on the type of traffic I am looking for, and there are some good sites on what not to do with webdesign.

    Thanks

    - Clear Navigation
    - Nice Presentation (not too cluttered, easy on the eye, easy to read)
    - Allows for easy optimal presentation of what you are trying to offer
    - Don't clutter with ads, and have good content if you want to keep your visitor
    - Keep loading times small
These are ideal for most projects but you may have an odd project where you want cluttered pages and crazy navigation but this is rare.

Thanks for the information and tips. I have a general idea and am looking for as much as I can to have it a clean page.
Would it be a good idea to use a Wordpress page, or go with another option.

Generally, I don't mind a landing page as long as it's not a big flash file, and the next step is obvious.

But if you want or need the page to be useful due to the text and content, I think they can be detrimental or inadequate.

Why have a landing page when a home page is just as good in most cases?

In my opinion, the only reason to use a landing page should be to collect some sort of info from the visitor. If you want a fancy flash video then I suggest you include that on your home page with supporting text because search engines cannot read flash so your site may not get indexed.

It depends on your experience really, and what the site is about I guess Wordpress is good as it enables somebody with very little experience or knowledge run a site with decent control over it.
Even with experience and knowledge you can take Wordpress to what ever level you desire. It allows you to have your own static pages on top of it.

OK, I am getting the idea for this now. I will try with a simple but informative homepage, and a design the landing page to be a lot lighter and SEO friendly.
    Many thanks to all.

I assumed your landing page was going to be your homepage, if you are talking about a sort of splash page then i'd have to say there is no need for one in many cases. They have little usage. Saves you time and it's better the homepage should present what your site offers.
