I'm looking to upgrade my server. Initially I have my eyes on this: But I got an advice saying that rather than buying 1 server and put all of my sites into it, why not distribute them to several servers? And he offered me 3 of this for $300. So, my questions: #1- Should I buy 3 servers and distribute my sites on every of them OR should I buy the 1 server and put all of my sites in it? #2- Are the 2nd server offer worth the money? #3- Which is better perfomance? server 1 or that 3 server combined together? #4- I think Dual Opteron is kinda an old processor. So, what is the new processor that fall in the same range of price of this Opteron? Hope I can get precious feedback from you guys. Thank you. PW
hey ... i will suggest u to go with option 2. Answers 1) 3 servers will be better for you . you are spending just 41 $ more 2) i think yes. You are getting at good rates. otherwise check on theplanet.com for comparative rates 3) well this comparision is not good. bcz see if u have 10 websites and u r hosting in 1 server then may be u cant get good performance in all ... its better u host 3 sites /each server you will get better performance. 4) i think Phenom processor. less rates comparative performance
Thanks for the comments and suggestions. Rep added. Anyway, is it right for me to assume Dual Opteron would be to match Core2Duo?
What sort of sites and how many sites? Also, what sort of upstream switching and saturation do you have? If you are running proxies the you might try to get your three servers on different segments so that they're not competing for bandwidth Unless you are pushing a lot of media, paying for 750 GB disks is a waste. Opteron 2.2 GHz is a little on the light side by today's standards but it should still be enough to saturate a 10 Mbit line if you are not pushing too much dynamic content.
$300 for 3 FULLY MANAGED servers? Something not true for me Server management is not something install-once. You will need to spend time to check everything everyday. You should research carefully before ordering
3 Fully managed server for $300? Doubtful. I would proceed cautiously and make sure there is nothing being hidden and all fees are disclosed upfront.
Thank you for all the advise. I have 12 sites on my current server right now and they are really pushing the server to its limit. Harddisk is also important to me as I host files for one of my download site. Taking into account that Dual Opteron have 4 cores, I might take this offer. I do admit that it sounds dirt cheap for this kind of setup but I'm kinda trust the guy. I thinking to take precautions such as phone verification, address verification, talking to the main DC myself andasking around hosting forums about the stability of the DC. Are these enough?
If you trust that guy, feel free to go with them. 3 servers clustered will be much better than 1. And let us know how you feel later Just saying again, if I were you, I would not put my business / money into too good to be true offer - a very high risk. Good luck to you.
Core2's are a bit faster, but only a little, and I don't think it's enough to notice. If you're going to spread your websites over three servers, you won't notice the speed difference at all. 300 for 3 fully managed servers? Wow, thats a damn good deal--if you can get it, do it, but it does sound fishy. But, if the Core2 is much better than the server your sites are on now, you should be able to fit them all on one server and be fine.
I decided to take on the offer. So, I will have the server by tonight. Total of 12 cores (4 cores per machine. 2 cores per CPU) Thanks everyone for the advices.
