SMF vs MYBB vs PHPBB3 (plus my experience up to date)

    Hi,

I am about to design a forum. I have narrowed the choice down to 3 free forum software.

    SMF, MYBB and PHPBB3

Over the last month or so i have registered on their communities and these are my opinions..

SMF : Decent amount of themes, mods but the community is very very slow to respond to a question!

MYBB : Forum looks nice enough but seems a bit complicated to me compared to others. Community i have found to be very cocky, arrogant. One particular support member on the MYBB forum is very rude and instead of answering a question just tuts at people. So unprofessional! And it has really put me off what seems to be quite a good piece of software.

PHPBB3 : Looks nice but the permissions are stupid imo. Cant comment on the community as it went down almost as soon as i registered due to the hack they have had.

So.... Taking it all into consideration , what is the best one for me. I know my stuff about computer hardware, and windows but php and forums arent my strong point!

    Matt

I have chosen to go with mybb.
The new version is much more complicated to edit in my opinion than 1.2, however its much less bulky than SMF. PHPBB is just a bit no no, i wouldnt touch that with a barge pole.

As for the community, i had the same opinion, however once your forum is up and running you will be ok. I have just installed it on the ukhardhouse.info if your interested in taking a look and seing what can be done with it. Its took me about 2 days (not constant) and i managed to get it to fit in with the main site.

Just my opinion. Its the best free software.

    Hi,

    Your site looks really good!

I might go with MYBB. I think the main thing that put me off was the attitude of some of the members on the MYBB community forum

My experience up to date with MyBB is much better.

    1) The software is amazing and easy to learn.
    2) The community is friendly and helpful most of the time.

myBB is great, it looks bit complicated at first glance due to its coding and all. But it will just take a week for u to understand things. Admincp is pretty simple and clear and easy to understand. Amazingly its easy to edit any tempaltes with basic knowledge of HTML and CSS. I'd say that sometimes i feel myBB is ebtter then vBulletin. vBulletin guyz charge $190 or something and again u gotta goto other place to buy vbseo then other place fo this and that and themes.... So i'd strongly recommend myBB.

I've used SMF, phpBB and MyBB. Believe me MyBB is better than the 2.
