Adwords Expert Book?

Discussion in 'Google AdWords' started by rdeering, Feb 5, 2009.

In September, I was thrown into the SEO jungle. I had no prior experience. Since then, I have learned a lot about google adwords, but since i started reading this forum, i realize i dont know nearly enough. Does anyone know of a good book SPECIFICALLY for adwords? I have seen some books but the websites look really spammy - I checked Amazon but the number of reviews dont give me any comfort. I was hoping someone had used one that would help me out - I know how to use adwords, i just dont know how to use it to my advantage. Thanks!

This is possibly what you dont want to hear, but i dont think that any book can truely teach how to get the best of adwords specifically.

Instead i would read this forum, go over adwords own info often and read sites and blogs that provide information about copywriting, landing pages, optimising ad text and so on.

I feel that you need to pick out quality information from various sources rather than trying to find what could work from a book alone.

Ive also personally found that just following lists that others have put together on their blogs is not enough, if you only read through those then its limited.

I keep searching, theres lots of professional sites out there with good writers explaining various areas of working with ppc.

I normally recommend "Winning Results with Google AdWords" by Andrew Goodman, second edition was published recently.

I didn't read any Adwords books as the 'best' one was years old.

Instead I used Google and searched for bits I didn't understand such as 'split testing', quality score' etc and then found this forum. Along with the Google help files it was enough to become good at it.

In my view, absolutely no need to pay for knowledge, as far as Adwords goes - it's all available on the net.

Anyone who writes a book basically could not make money doing that which they wrote about.

    Remember those who can ....DO

Those who can't write and teach......:D

Seriously though books are self serving....one of the highest selling adwords books by someone who shall remain nameless..... recommended throwing 5000 words into a campaign  when setting things up for the first time.....

Needless to say that is the worst advice ever given and has lost more people, more money to Google, than most countries have as there yearly GDP.

Now everyone knows how Google bought their Jets lol....

The problem with ebooks and crap like that on adwords is they're out of date the moment they're done. It changes so fast that you can't keep up via an ebook or especially a printed one.

Perry Marshall's soft cover book Ultimate Guide to Google AdWords isn't bad. There are some good advertising principles, using AdWords or any direct medium, taught which never change.

Except when he wrote it, he hated affiliate marketers. Perry specializes in showing businesses how to advertise their own products on adwords. He just recently started accepting affiliate marketers as real legit competitors for his business ads.

Have you read the book? And did this person say anything about learning to be an affiliate?

I found this book the best as well. I think its a good read if you're into really dry humor. However, a lot of these books are quite opinionated. If you end up forwarding on those opinions in a forum like this you'll get bitch slapped.

Perry Marshall's definitive guide suggested, however, its more about experience.

One of those things to always remember is that a book is normally just one person's opinion - in my view the best way to learn is to absorb as many differing viewpoints as possible and make your own judgements on them.

Well put. Have you absorbed my structure of not placing 3 match types in the same Ad Group, yet :D;)

Very much willing to try it out though, I do think the strategy is sound and could work for some accounts but not conceding yet! ;)

The only way to ever really understand adwords is simply this: pick one expert's book, read it, and then start running campaigns and testing those methods. If you don't like that guy's methods then trash him and start using someone else's method instead.

Just set your testing budget to something small like $5 a day to begin, and you should be ok. You can always raise it once you feel more confident in what you're doing.

Plus if everything still doesn't make sense when you're ready to start, Google does have some basic tutorials that help with learning how to do adwords.

PS: Remember to use a credit when you start advertising with adwords, especially if you're afraid to make a mistake. Use Google's money not yours.

I didn't write it. PPC Coach wrote it. He's got qualifications up the yazoo. One other thing... don't judge a book by it's cover. I'm not charging for it, so you might want to read it before spouting off. :)
