    Hi,

I just got 6th position for my website on the keyword which has about 2,920,000 results which is about 3 million results.

For those who haven't ranked on such competition, here is an advice:

    Don't overdo SEO.
Be patient (it took 4 months to me for this position)
No need of too many links just some juicy niche relevant links will do, have a look at my total amount of backlinks on yahoo, they are low. (Look what number of links my competitors have)
    Keep reading about SEO everyday.

And those who have already ranked on competition of 3 million can share your views on my ranking.

P.S: I forgot to say a Big Thank you to DP (this forum has made my life). :)

"Keyword results" is not an indicator of actual searches. Just wanted to point that out because many people make the mistake of targeting a keyword based on results, not actual searches. You want to focus on keywords that will actually bring you traffic. A keyword might show 20 million results, but only result in a 100 monthly searches. A number 6 rankings would bring you an estimated 4% click through rate, so a hundred monthly searches would translate to 4 visitors a month - obviously a keyword not worth targeting. Adwords has a great tool for estimating traffic.

Yes it obvious to research keywords before optimizing.
I know what I am doing and I have increased my traffic with some profits.
Also I think 6th position gets about 7-9% from total hits for that keyword.
Do you think I am doing wrong by targeting keyword: webmasters forum?

Google shows search volume at 480 for January. It appears that most people don't add the "s" when searching - 3,600 and 2,400 monthly searches. Your domain name is the primary reason for your current ranking.

Nope, do you completely rely on these tools (I am getting nice amount of traffic) also domain name doesn't helped me much.
But you are right many people don't add 's' while searching this phrase.

Having an exact match domain name is a big factor in the google algorithm - that's not debatable. This particular keyword phrase is not competitive, so google will rely mostly on domain name and content - where backlinks play a much more important role with competitive keywords.

without being offensive, your forum still has no posts. and you're competing with forums like DP. why should i go to your forum and not just use DP?

again, not to be harsh, i would just like to hear your reasons

Having keyword in domain name has some effect but it can't rank you on competition of 3 million.
And what I wanted to do is learn SEO rather than having traffic so I choose this keyword Otherwise there many keywords which can get me more traffic than this keyword having less competition.

    I got 40 UV's today. :)

Well, DP is big so others should stop making there own forums?
And 70% people want to register on all webmasters forum even my forum has less posts than DP, they like to register too my site.
Comparing DP with my forum is like comparing 0 with 1000. :)

That's not true. Results does not equal sites targeting a keyword - in fact, it doesn't mean anyone is targeting it. I have a site that has over 18 million results and has ranked #2 for the last year with no work whatsoever except paying $10 for some directory submissions a couple of years ago. It's not a competitive keyword (about 4,800 monthly searches) and the domain name matches the keyword phrase.

The number of google results returned is pretty much a worthless number. You only need to look at the first 30 (paying the most attention to the top 10) to get an idea of the difficultly in obtaining a top ten ranking.

to OP: you said "domain name hasn't helped me much"

I don't know if you realize it but your domain name inURL "thewebmastersforum.com" and the keyword you're ranking for is "webmasters forum". 99% of the success of that SERP is from your keyword in your URL.

and i thought: "for competition of 3 million searches" =\
and, yea domain name plays big role on all type of keywords, and yea 10-50 first resutls matters to determine competition, and yea 5-10k volume a month is low, and yea - you should have a domain that his pages or sub domains target variations of the first most searched keyword - in this case you don't

How can you say keyword I am using is not having much competition?
Do you know Google do not give value to characters like 's' in some results. Now you will be thinking this statement is wrong so here is the proof: Here
Can I see which keyword you are talking where results are 18 million and you got ranked #2 by just doing Directory submission.
Also I don't think Google's number of results are worthless. The number of results is an estimation on how much efforts its going to rank on such keywords. You are calculating competition by searches per month which is wrong way to calculate. If obama got famous today, the searches for his name will be in millions while the results are same so anyone can rank on that keyword but It doesn't mean its a competitive keyword.

I mean to say I started doing seo from last 3 months and got these results, my site was up before but without doing any SEO it was not in top 100.
I know having keyword in domain helps a lot but its not the sole reason for this ranking.

I'm listed on the first page of Google for a few keywords. But don't get but maybe 100 visit's a month from it. So I would say 1st page listings don't automaticly mean a ton of traffic. It depends on your niche and how many search's are made for your keywords. My niche is small I guess, it's not a general term like "computers"
