    Hey everyone,

I recently posted an article on the Palm Pre Smartphone. I was ranked #3 in Google for a "best smartphone" search out of 10,000,000 results...

Now, I'm on page 3. Does anyone know what happened?

Could it be one of the competitors (engadget, cnet) using blackhat techniques or other methods unknown to me to destroy my rank?

Some ideas would be most appreciated...

don't think it has anything to do with black hat. I have heard something like Google gives higher priority to the new content initially, but then equalizes it with other comparable pages. Try to update your article I guess.

    Thanks for your tips everyone.

Could you point a new webmaster in the right direction for help on building strong backlinks (aside from the digg, reddit, wordpress usual stuff)?

    Thanks very much...

I always try to submit my pages to as many website directories as possible. Some of them has pretty good PageRank and you get lot of one-way links to your site free. You may also write e-mail to webmasters of sites with similar theme and ask them about placing a link to you site.
You can also get links by adding your site to your signatures in forums, but this is not so effective.
You may also try to make a blog, some other pages (google webpages, Squidoo and similar) and place a link to your site there.

Maybe because you stoped posting new articles , and stop building backlinks also.

I think you should make more backlinks to the post.
So that google will notice that post is still alive.

You post an article->Google crawls your site and reads the new content->G thinks, "Wow, new content, Lemme index it"->G pushes your post to the top in searches based on keywords->G leisurely calculates the relevancy and the competency of your post with other posts that it has in its indexed list of files for your keywords.

Wooosh, goes your post to inner pages. Dont worry about this. It takes lot of effort and lots of time to create backlinks and to become relevant in your niche.

It is very interesting that Google ranks new contents higher than old pages. I never knew that.

It is normal and happen to everyone too. Just for an example, 2 squidoo lenses can both rank #1 & #2 since 3~5day they created, but drop or GONE in another week. It'll indexed later on but for a lower rank (sometimes your site will back to #1). Perhaps it is because G like fresh content, let dance with google. :)
