I have a few blogs that I just put templates on and made a couple posts to test it out but haven't actually started developing them yet. I haven't submitted the domains anywhere but somehow people have found them. I get spammed 10-20 times a day per blog via comments. I have them set to auto-delete but the thing is... everyday more comments, all from the same couple of IP addresses. Are these people just completely stupid? They must realize their old comments aren't getting put up. Or are these just bots? Either way I'd love to shut down the sites they are linking to... perhaps I should recruit some friends to perform some DoS attacks?
Same thing here I just started a new site that won't be finished for months. I've added a comment section and I'm already getting spam from bots it's crazy. I'm just auto deleting them as well since theirs no point in reading them.
yeah they are using a bot. But I'm sure it's somewhat to COMPLETLY BLOCK THEM. May I ask what theme are your blogs?
Music, martinis, atheism and personal blogs. What's odd though is the only one they don't spam is my PR5 atheist blog. The others haven't even been ranked yet. The ads are completely unrelated to music or martinis as well. I must find out how to block the IP.
Captcha isn't much of use when hordes of typing monkeys (they're actually real people who are being paid for leaving comments) attacking your blog. I use a combination of captcha, akismet and common sense. However, it doesn't always work, so I started building a code piece that would gather stats about who's spamming my blog and create a stop-list in some universal format (I'm thinking CSV) of e-mail and IP used, URL being promoted and some other technical info (like date/time, since chances are - it's a software that someone leaves running for some time). However, the need to make money was kind of superseding this effort, so it's somewhere in between an idea and half-finished code.
Even I am very much annoyed with these spammers.. How do they manage to get so much of time to do such useless acts...beats me. On a poster's suggestion, I have installed Akismet...Let me see how far useful it is in dealing with this menace.. Regards, RightMan
I just turn off comments for most of my blogs. Kinda defeats the purpose of a blog, I guess. But hasn't seemed to hurt rankings.
the simple bots are pretty easy to spot. The more advanced ones are indistinguishable from a real human, and use multiple IPs to prevent you banning them.
Options: Install anti spam plugins as suggested above/ Make users register in order to comment (THis often upsets real commenters) Ban the domain in the backend of wordpress so that everytime that domain is included it is added to the spam list. Locate common keywords that people use to spam you with and add them in also to the blacklist on the backend of WP. (Make sure no legitimate commenters would use those words.) Install a simple "do the maths" plugin where the user must answer a simple maths sum in order to comment. Ban the offending IP range using Htaccess (Although this doesnt work always as they use multiple IP's and proxies)l Use a plugin like spam karma. It runs several tests to see if the user is real. Imma sure theres plenty of other ways. Vbut this about adds everything i can think of right now into 1.
It's all G's fault! It's a shame that the one we try to impress can be used against us a million times over. LOL@typing monkeys. May they rot in primate hell, ALL of them!!
Hi there I had a wordpress bloke that was getting spammed to death too, i turned on that akismet plugin and my spam died down, maybe you could try something like this ? Woc
me too often get problems with those spammers. once I lg in, there are hundreds of comments which are spams. Lol. I ended it up by giving the job to someone else. Lol. I wonder how they could send such a huge number of comments in one day.
