we are considering getting a EV SSL certificate (green address bar) and are trying to determine the best certificates (not encryption-wise, but would make visitors more comfortable with a site) to help increase conversions for mainstream users. got the company logos, as many of the seals you could not right-click onto get the image url Rather than give my biased thoughts out, thought i would ask first the community
I've seen the VeriSign Secured one around a lot, I'm not so familiar with the other ones as site badges. I think going with one that is the most familiar to users is a good move, although the BBB well known as well - and offers the opportunity for users to read reviews about your company if you're registered there. I would go with either of those.
We use the EV and TRUSTe. BBB is useless IMO. I have found even with all the logos, etc on your site the big key in building trust is with your sales copy, and your UI.
so check this out, we decided on the thawte certificate then when i looked at the page again and saw it at 599. which was strange because i remembered it as more. i looked from a different computer and the same one was 899. then from a different computer it was 799. amazing, i thought only companies like expedia/orbitz did stuff like that
I do not think main stream users know anything about encryption or SSL certificate companies. Most users could probably not name the SSL provider for the top 5 websites they use. EV certs are nice but only protect one domain ex www.test.com does not work for test.com and the CABfourm specified this in the spec for EV certs so there will never be a wildcard EV cert. Although there are ways to present a EV cert green bar and use a wildcard cert. Thawte are good EV certs but do not have SGC as a option. If I was going all out on a EV I would also pay the extra for SGC depending on the use of the cert. Also you can get much better pricing if you use a reseller.
