Is Google cheating us all for profit?

I think I am in the correct discussion for my post!

Am I correct in thinking that Google, as a company, see the opportunity of a new website targeting a very popular keyword and thinks...

"Ahh, if we put them in a Sandbox for a few months and don't show their page for their most popular keyword the possibilities are that they will addword for a while pocketing us a fortune!"

What do others think of this? :D

I have a 4 week old website that is ranked in google but not for my main keyword "Wedding Inviations". Page 1 in yahoo!!!!

    Is this how Google works?

I'm not sure I entirely understand, but are you suggesting that they block sites with popular keywords from ranking highly until they purchase an adwords campaign? I'm fairly certain that's not the case, although not necessarily because they haven't thought of it, but because everything in that company runs on algorithms. What you're describing is a pretty manual process - they have to decide what keywords are popular, what sites are ranking well, but not so well that it would be suspicious for them to disappear, take them out of the search results, check back to see if they've got an adwords campaign, put them back in... you see where I'm going with this? No way. And how many people rising in search results would think, "oh I better get an adwords campaign" not give up or possibly use other methods??

Anyway, have you tried spelling the keyword "wedding invitations" correctly?

    Google exists for searchers.
It's got to be the biggest and most popular location on the internet for people to find what they are looking for by consistently serving up results that are relevant and useful.
For all that we all moan about it, and are quick to point out it's failings, we all use it for that reason.
So - no, I think you're talking bollox - if google consistently skewed it's results for such a silly, short-sighted and corrupt reason, it would lose it's position as the world's favourite search engine pretty quickly.

I don't see any 4 week old websites on page 1 of Yahoo nor would I expect one unless it went black hat and even then only temporarily. Considering the term you're using is super competitive (assuming the correct spelling) I don't see how a 4 week old site could make it to page 2 or even 3.

    You'll have to elaborate.

Are you checking your rankings in a country specific search engine?

I personally think that roglowe's theory has some grounds to it. I think a large percentage of sand boxed websites would have no choice but to consider paying for some AdWords. I don't believe that adding AdSense gets you out of the sandbox though. Google has constantly been fighting various seo strategies. A major reason to fight some of those strategies is to lead them to use ppc for traffic instead. Google figures only the very best websites should have free traffic and everyone else should pay for it. Google will do nearly anything to try to increase their advertising revenue. They are not as ethical as many people think.

I don't think they're necessarily ethical, I just think they have to set up a system that allows them to have a process as automatic as possible. Now, I'm certainly not one to doubt Google's algorithms so perhaps that is the case, but to me, a lot of that sounds awfully manual which is why I don't think it makes a ton of sense.

Why would any of it be manual? All it is is automatically putting new websites into the sandbox, then automatically removing them after a certain time frame. Nothing about that has to be manual. Sorry meaghan but it seems like I disagree with a lot of your opinions on this forum.

Haha, ok, fine by me - if I was easily offended by people disagreeing with me I should probably try to avoid the internet ;)

I read about Sandbox on the internet and read that new sites could well be put into a sandbox if targeting a popular keyword to stop spammers.

    As Vamsterdam said ...

QUOTE: I think a large percentage of sand boxed websites would have no choice but to consider paying for some AdWords

Google may slow the ranking down, maybe for new ecommerce sites, in the high likely possibility that they adword like crazy to start trading online. Seems a good business strategy to me and it would not effect the consumer at all! After a few months and £1000's in adwords Google pull them out of sandbox, pat them on the back and say "Welcome! Your not a spammer. We trust you now"

There are many phrases I could type in such as "silver broderie wedding invitations" and we land page 1 in google. So I know we are indexed.

    Interesting thought though.

    Thanks for the replies.

    MAGDA...
I am asking a question based on thought. Don't judge said question to be, how can I put this? ..... worthless, deserving scorn or beneath consideration. Those words describe a person asking if it's possible Sergy Brin & Larry Page are really aliens that came down from planet Google with their Robots and built a search engine. (hang on.... Now that IS a thought!)

    RBUCICH: Yahoo.co.uk is the region.

Google is making a profit by having people use Adwords, but that's not the real reason why they have filters and an aging delay for new websites. They have the filters because they want good content and mature sites to be in the index. If Google didn't have relevant pages showing up in their search engines, no one would even use Google because it would be filled with spam pages. Then Adwords wouldn't matter anymore.

Considering the massive volume of new sites added to the index daily/hourly...who knows the number? There can't possibly be a manual process. If there was, Google would have to have 10 times as many employees and wouldn't be profitable.

That said, Google engineers use their own service and if they run across a mediocre site (new) appearing high in the results ahead of more valuable sites you can bet they have some methodology for dropping the site to a normal level (conjecture mostly).

This is assuming that a new site cannot possibly have as valuable content as a well weathered competitor.

Google is very forthcoming in their own blogs about what they do and don't do. There are several and Matt Cutts in particular is worth reading for insight.

It is highly unlikely that Google would do this on purpose. It simply takes time to get good rankings in Google. I had the same feeling about sandbox as you when I started my web, but when looking at it now, the sandbox makes sense. It gives you time to improve it. If your site is really better than the others, it would get the rankings it deserves in time (unless spammers overtake you ;) ).

Something has changed. My site now appears page 31 on google UK for my top keyword. The site is 5 weeks old now and this is the first time it has appeared for my top keyword. Phrases and other non popular keywords were always fine.

Seems like I am out of the box. Just keep my eye on it now.

    Thanks for all the replies.

    Hello...

I think that the filter (sandbox) can be overriden if you know how ;)

I suppose we could go on about conspiracy theories but i believe it was
put in place to prevent the 3 months scammers from opening up shop
then closing it down after enough people have fallen victim to there sites.

I dont think Google is cheating.

You are wrong. You say "popular keyword". Well, that's a moneykey. Money keywords have strong filters and you can nearly impossibly get around the sandbox with money keys. Why? Because all the SEOs do sites for all the money keys - cause they hope to make big money. ;) That's just the truth I have to tell you.

You can not expect a 5 months old site to rank top for highly competitive keyword.
It takes ages and efforts to reach there. And, Sandboxs do exists to prevent webspam.
