I have read a few posts about webmasters removing their sitemaps and achieving a higher number of pages indexed in Google. As a webmaster of a fairly new site (about 2 weeks old) I have been using Google Sitemaps and most of my pages (as of now 45 pages: site:freeseoquiz.com/ ) have been indexed. Possibly this is just because my site is new.
People, who's website is not fully indexed may have many pages which are not in the sitemap, and google may decide to skip some pages if they are not in the sitemap - i dont fully understand how it works, so I could be wrong.
My website - squarehippies.com is quite new and got indexed after I submitted my sitemap to Google. Only now the content is 1 week old although I resubmit my sitemap regularly whenever I update my site.
I think googlesitemap is the important thing that your site shoul have to make your site fully indexed
I created and submitted my sitemap a week ago. Unforunetly Google has yet ito index a single page. It doesn't report any crawling errors, and actually indicates my secure side url as the only page indexed. The https:\\ page has been indexed for months, without using sitemaps. Hopefully it's just a matter of time, as I know of no way to force Sitemaps to index.
It is still a good idea to get some incoming links. A Google XML sitemap itself is no guarantee that all pages will be crawled and indexed.
