Hi There is nothing called permanent link unless you are trusted site in Google. All the things you/others have listed are some of the ways you do to get traffic. When you are targeting your keywords your competitors are not sitting idle they promote their site on these keywords,so SEO is an ongoing process and it also depends on your on-page factors.
There are many methods to create quality back links towards your websites. If you want to create permanent back links so, you can do following step by step. Directory Submission - Try instant approval directory submission. Article Submission - Try high traffic article submission web sites. Press Release - Free press release and where we can create anchor tag. Forum Posting - Forum posting with signature. (Specially do follow) Social Bookmark - (Do follow social bookmarks) Blog Creation & Comment - Create blog and comment on blogs. Create Wiki Pages - Edit wiki pages. Create How to pages - Create How to pages. Answering theme based There are many other, - best luck....
Methods for lazy people who can't write well (me): Many people say that one should make submission only to do-follow sites, I don't quiet agree, I think search engines like yahoo or some other lesser search engines still count no follow links. So if you can get them, get them anyway. 1. Directory Submission - to get site started off. Rotate your titles and descriptions a bit for a large selection of keywords. 2. Social bookmarking - Bookmark sites, I have about bookmarking accounts in about 400+ bookmarking sites, and try to alternate between marking my own site pages, and some useful sites I found so I don't get perma banned by bookmarking services. 3. Press release - Hire someone to write one if you can, otherwise wait on that, cost quiet a bit, I am not sure about the effects. 4. Yahoo anwers. For example, I run a free classified ads site http://www.jihoy.com, I go and answer every question that asks "what are sites like Craigslist", or "what to advertise for free", etc... 5. Stumbles! Get all your friends to stumble your site, your pages, those brings in some good amount of traffic over time. 6. Get listed in local business directories, I get some small amount of traffic from local.com or merchant circle. 7. Free Classified Ads - Look up "Free Classifieds", or "Free Classified Ads", some have page rank are do-follow and let your post last in the relevant category forever (such as my site). 8. Article submission - I have bunch of PLR articles, which I use cheap programs I bought to rewrite, then proof read a bit to submit. However, with article submissions, there is duplicate content issue. However, contrary to popular belief, duplicate content outside of your site will not hurt you, they just don't show up when user does the search query, and their page rank stack up onto the one copy of content that has the most authority. Two of the submission services I like: I'd recommend submityourarticles.com, which is $47 monthly in which you can create rewrites of the same articles, and it will submit a unique copy to each one. However, there is a limit of 8 articles a month. I am using unique article wizard (see my signature link), it cost $67 a month but it's unlimited submissions. However, they don't accept porn, gambling, drugs, and anything that isn't appropriate for kids. So there are some limitations, and their site is a bit slow sometimes. I managed to start ranking about one month since my site's creation on some fairly competive keywords. And they also have service in where you can choose to accept articles submissions. I actually gotten tons of articles through the service, and some my competitor's submissions who were ranked #1 for a search term that has abnormally high conversion rate. So I now know what he is doing and what keywords he is trying to rank well for through his article submissions :-D
I have the same goal as you, and to keep up-to-date with how many backlinks I need, I usually compare with famous sites or I consider sites that own high traffic, and there's one tool I use and give me good result: marketleap.com/publinkpop/ You can track 3 of your competitors. The tool will then show how many backlinks you and your competitors have on the three most important search engines Google, MSN and Yahoo.
I believe things depends much on your keywords. If you are targeting high competition keywords than you have to work continously to get visitors but if you are targeting low competition keywords than you will keep getting the same number of visitors from search engines for long time, without working more...
Search Engines would drive permanent traffic if the Seo is being done with consistency. Social Bookmarking, Articles, Forums etc would drive traffic only when you're active and should be maintained consistency in postings and submissions. But if you've performed ethical link building, your website would be ranked top in Search Engines for specific targeted high search volume keywords which would directly drive a good amount of steady traffic. All you need to do at this point of time is to concentrate on Link Building, On-Page optimization and continuous updates in the website content.
Do all the process such as directory submission, social bookmarking, article submission, forum posting and then you will get a good number of back links and also you will get permanent traffic.. still there is no counting of how much..........try to find out from where your competitor is getting links and try to get the same ........
better your ranking, more no of keywords ranking, well popualiry is the ideal way of getting traffics
You should concentrate on relevant and quality of content of your site. You should focus on backlinks from similar content sites, page ranked sites for directory submission, article submission.

There is no such thing as permanent traffic. One always needs to focus on helping people by concentrating on a particular niche and providing the best solutions...day in and day out... Build your reputation amongst your visitors slowly and gradually and you are sure to have regular traffic. Regards, RightMan
i completely agree with him. stop your marketing campaign and all your traffic will vanish. be consistent in your online marketing efforts and you will taste the success
Nothing is permanent in seo. you have to keep doing your work continuously and seriously for best results
