Google Pagerank with no incoming links?

I'm a bit confused here. Pagerank is based on the number of incoming links, correct?

So how is it that two of my sites, which aren't new but have pretty much just been sitting around doing nothing and have no incoming links, have a PR of 2 and 4 (www.mikebogo.com and www.thebogo.com, respectively)? Is the google toolbar just throwing out random numbers here for fun?

(Offhand note: Digitalpoints email servers are fast - gmail already had the forum confirmation email showing in my inbox by the time I managed to click from one firefox tab to another. Nice.)

The April 4th update baffled the world. Some sites got as far up as a 7 for nothing. I have even seen sites with no links, and no content (just a template) get 5's and 6's. It was a monster of an update and there was no rhyme or reason behind the new rankings.

There are links to both these sites showing in google. Google isn't showing them as backlinks, but they only show a fraction and they still pass pr. Just do a regular search on google for "thebogo.com".

    Not possible.

Without links, the page never gets indexed. It's orphaned. Once indexed, you have internal links as well. If you're using the link: operator as a basis for your link count, Google only shows a sampling of the links it knows about. Sometimes that sampling is zero.

Your website probably have tons of backlinks but it's just not showing up on google, many people seems to be mentioning the 4th April as a "bad" PR update (I think that too)... we never know what algo google is using.
Yes many new websites have got fairly high PR, 2 of my blogs got PR5 and one of our new website got PR3 with 0 backlinks showing on google. But had a lot of backlinks when we check on yahoo or msn.

Just want to tell everybody here that I saw lot of new sites that has no backlinks and still they got PR.That is why there is a thread here in DP that define PR as Pointless Rank not Page Rank. It's really frustrating on my part that after lot of hardwork that is put in my site to get those PR then suddenly new sites without any work done on it even a single link is getting this PR.Anyway there are lot of factors why you get this PR.Not just the links pointing to your site.

Well, this happend with my domain as well which has no site no backlinks
i just bought and kept it as it is and i got PR3 in just 5 months.
The reason can be aging of domain (because i never created any site never did any link exchange)
so its just a BIG ??? for all seo's why the PR boosted suddenly

PR is only related to the links pointing at your site. Nothing else.

As stated, your site would not be indexed unless there was a link pointing to it. Post the url of this site and I will show you the link.
