What causes (not set) in analytics and not tracking adwords?

Within my analytics account > adwords section it just shows (not set) so obviously not tracking, i have auto-tagging enabled.

The analytics code is in place on the pages.

Hi SDunroe, no ive not used the Url builder yet, while i was looking for info earlier i saw a mention of the Url builder if the auto tagging feature doesn't work.

Il take a good look at the Url builder, hope it doesn't make me sound lazy  hoping the auto tagging feature would work.

I guess as long as theres a solution with using the Url builder, thats the most important thing, thanks for the link SDunroe.

When filling in the campaign fields in the Url builder is it correct to include utm_source= before for example google?

So utm_source=google would be correct as an entry in the form field?

In those fields you do not need to enter any code, solely words like "ppc", "google", etc. The builder will generate the code for you. Is that what you mean?

Hi Scott i had actually entered utm_source= as well as the word google, i just had a quick look in analytics and it ends up showing utm_source and all that which doesn't look right.

So i just enter like below, the word needed only?

    google
    ppc

Exactly, we usually only use the fields that are mandatory (*) and enter something along the lines of "ppc", "qualityclicks" and the adgroup / keyword name. This allows the client to distinguish that the traffic is coming from Adwords, the QC campaign and also from what subject on their website.

Thanks very much, il redo it today and keep to how your doing it with only using the mandatory fields too.

Im aiming to get things as correct as possible on a current campaign before setting up further campaigns.

First question - is you AdWords account linked to your Analytics account? You can check this in Edit Account Settings (next to the name of your Analytics account once you have logged into the main screen i.e. before you view reports). If you have the option to unlink your account then that's a good start.

Next: There's no need to use the URL builder for an AdWords account but you do need to ensure that you have set auto-tagging in 2 places.

    1. Google Analytics makes it easy to track your AdWords referrals effortlessly using the auto-tagging feature. Auto-tagging is enabled by default when you link your AdWords and Analytics accounts. To turn auto-tagging on or off at any time, update the checkbox in your Account Preferences from your AdWords My Account tab. Using auto-tagging allows you to bypass the steps to tag the URLs of your AdWords advertisements.
    From Google Help

    2. In your Analytics Profile Information you should also tick the "Apply Cost Data:" checkbox.

BUT if you have extra variables passed through in your URL you may have issues
    e.g.
    mysite.com/?a=3&b=6
Thsi is beacuse the gclid may then not be seen properly. Great explaination of this at Search Engine Watch.

Let me know if you're still havnig issues with this - will take a few hours at least to see data coming though....

Hi squarecat, my adwords & analytics accounts are both linked, at first i had auto-tagging enabled, but had not ticked Apply Cost Data is it possible that not having Apply Cost Data ticked could stop the auto tagging feature from working?

Well last night i disabled auto tagging then used the url builder (used the url builder slightly wrong) but it did show up a click from last night.

But now im thinking its maybe worth changing the url's back to standard (how they were) and enabling auto tagging plus il have Apply Cost Data ticked this time, which had not been ticked at the beginning.

Think its worth a try? this current campaign is really quiet so i will need to be patient while i wait for another click if i do the above.

Btw i recently contacted my host about gclid, but i misunderstood how that gclid was to do with when redirects are used, he explained a few days ago that if im just using standard html pages then the gclid thing wont be my concern.

I'd take a download of your AdWords account in AdWords Editor so that you can revert easily to the tagged URLs if required but I'd say it's worth a shot. You should get all the info through using the auto-tagging but I've heard of having to have the settings right in both places for it to work properly. You could click on a low cost KW just to see if the click comes through (the cost of getting tracking right!).

Much easier to play around with the account without the manual tracking URLs setup - that's one of the great reasons to use AdWords & Analytics together! ;)

Good idea actually, regarding downloading to editor, one thing i cant see is being able to set Apply Cost Data within analytics, i just see it when logged into adwords, the option to tick Apply Cost Data.

Yeah getting my tracking working properly is something i definately want to get sorted before going ahead with other campaigns.

Apply Cost data should be shown if you go the front screen of analytics (i.e. once you've logged in), select "Edit" next to the profile in question, then click "Edit" in the top right hand corner of the "Main Website Profile Information" box.

A few options down should be apply cost data - add a check.

I still dont see that option within analytics, following through to that edit section of Main Website Profile Information its not there.

I only see the option to enable Apply Cost data when logged into adwords and in the analytics section within adwords it then shows the option to Apply Cost Data within the Main Website Profile Information.

I guess as long as its enabled in there it will be ok.

That sounds about right - I mean just in Analytics, you can login through the Adwords interafce it doesn't really matter.

Sorry  i had misunderstood i thought you meant when logged into analytics and not when in analytics through adwords.

Sorting that now, enabling auto tagging and putting my destination url's back to how they were and will see how i get on with that. :)
