Running a subdomain on a different server?

Ok, it really annoys me when people's support forums go down with their main website..

I'm not sure whether I'm overlooking something simple here because I've been out of all this for years, but how do I run a support forum, on a subdomain of my main website, but on a different server so it remains up if my site is down?

to make things clear: support.mysite.com should be on a separate server to mysite.com

    Thanks a lot,
    Chuckun

Add a dns zone on mysite.com for support.mysite.com to point to the ip of support.mysite.com

But this solution is not ideal. If mysite.com server goes down, you would need a secondary temporary dns server to point support.mysite.com to correct ip

Thats the only solution, unless you run a DNS server.

I don't mind going to extremes, I can fund anything with time..

So the best way is to run the DNS myself? What sorta money we talking for this? (I've never considered this before, dedicated servers and own IP is as far as I've ever gone.)

    Thanks

    Hi Chuckun,

What OS are you running on your dedicated ?

If you run Windows server, i can help you to set it up.

It's free, and it's embeded in Windows servers. It's just an software option that you must install.

Basicly, if you run your own dns server(s). You just point the DNS server from your domain to your dedicated server to.

So when a request is comming in, it's gets redirect to your server, and thusfor, your DNS server wil redirect them to the correct ip adress (in your case, localy). It's realy simpel if you know what to do.

Setting up/configurating an DNS server is done in less then 5 minutes.

The bad thing with this is, that you consume traffic ... for nothing ...
Best thing to do, to set the TTL (Time To Live) for your domain to 3600 seconds.
To minimize the DNS traffic to your server.

add a dns zone on your server and stick in an A record for the sub domain you want.

you dont have to run ur own DNS for a simple thing like that.. use a DNS provider like freedns / zoneedit and use that as secondary NS. as pointed out, make a A / CNAME record for your forum / support subdomain.

If you do not want to run DNS server on your main site server then I would suggest to purchase Manage DNS service. It will not cost you more. If you purchase managed DNS then if your main site goes down then also your sub-domain will not go down.

I will be using this on a Linux server, so thanks a lot for your offer of help but I've never been a Windows Server fan

    Thanks! :D +rep

I don't want it done for me, but thanks for the offer.

Thanks, I'll look into this too, didn't know there were systems like that! +rep

I'll also look into Manage DNS :) Sounds like an option! Thanks a lot :) +rep
