.EDU more important?

I have read somewhere that .edu domains that link to your web site are more valuable than regular links (.com/.net/.org/.info....). I would like you all to weigh in on what you think.

I have one site that has nearly 100 backlinks from .edu sites and if they are that important I would love to add them to my website. Otherwise I just see it as a waste of time (of they are PR 0-3)....

    Thanks

    Zelo

I believe Google values .EDU sites quite highly. Though, I believe .GOV is valued even higher then EDU. Though if you have been backlinked by .EDU you should get a boost in SERP's and PR.

i think it might make a little tiny difference, but i think the other 299 factors play a bigger part in getting you to the top :)

.edu sites WAS very important, but now google detectes that people was using it to insert loinks and then links from .edu loose importance according to Google.

Don't worry about the TYPE of domain

Focus on the RELEVANCY of the links themselves.

Google crawls the Anchor Text, and they like to see the words on the Linking page matching your site's key words.

Here's an example of a good ".edu" link:

A California State University of Sacramento student was creating a Wedding planner web site for a College Computer Course, for university credit. There are different pages with vendor links, and my company was one of three Disc Jockeys (DJs) selected as wedding entertainers.

The page itself has matching key words, and there are only 3 outbound links on her page of "Wedding DJs in Sacramento".

Its my only .EDU link ---- but its probably a good one because of the RELEVANCY FACTOR.

.edu and .gov don't make links more powerful. .edu and .gov websites just happen to have lots of quality backlinks. So links from these websites are good because of their link strength, not just because they have a certain domain extension. .edu and .gov websites are usually well aged domains too. Google does not give preference to any domain extensions though. If that were the case you would see a lot more .edu and .gov results in normal search results.

I just took a look at my best .edu backlink. It's from an Ivy League university. It brings a fairly small amount of traffic. But that traffic is highly targeted, niche-focused traffic. And the visitors from that .edu link stay on my website for a long time and with a very low bounce rate. In sum, I'm saying that this .edu link (probably like many others) is a high-quality link.

.edu and .gov links are typically more valuable because they tend to be old authoritative sites. Get em if you can!
