i hope you get your computer problem sorted out.

you also better learn how to use multi quote [IMG] or your gonna get hammered with an infraction for padding your post count.

I dont think you understood my question. Is this a real windows XP cd, or an HP restore cd? There is a difference. Does the cd have "Windows XP" on it, or does it have "HP restore CD"??

Restore CDs are different from a real windows XP cd. Some restore cd's will only work with certain brands of computers. If you try to use a Dell restore cd on an HP computer, an error will pop-up saying that this is not a DEll computer and the intall will abort.

You have 9 restore or windows XP cd's laying around and 5 hard drives? You sound like you own a computer store.

And, something does not sound right. You said that the installer will run through the install script and then reboot. The first part of the installer checks for the hard drive. If the motherboard could not find the harddrive, the first part of the XP installer would stop with an error message.

To be honest, your story is not adding up. I have been doing computer repair for over 10 years and I am a network administrator for a local hospital. Certain parts of your story are not possible.

One of the first things the XP installer does is it checks your hard drives. But if your MB is not seeing the drives, the XP installer would stop during the first phases. So your statement that the installer runs through and then reboots can not be correct.

And, you can not "delete everything" - that has to be done with a format command or with FDISK. You have to use a boot CD, usb drive or boot floppy, boot into DOS and type FDISK, or use the format command to delete everything from your harddrive. FDISK and FORMAT do not touch the BIOS or CMOS.

If you want to reset your MB, boot into the BIOS and look for a setting called "restore factory defaults" or "Fail safe", check that settings, save and exit.

Or, unplug your computers power cord, and take the battery out of your motherboard for 5 minutes. This will reset the MB back to factory defaults.

Weird, if it can't detect the hard disk how could it do no.1 question that u mentioned "Then once the complete blue screen section where it installs all the way up to it says where it will reboot with red bar works fine."

    4.
Still the same thing, if it can't detect the hard disk, how can it do no.1 question and proceed to what you claimed no.2. 9 different disks mean 9 original disk which is not came along with HP. Some old model of HP, actually preloaded, and do not give any cd, except drivers.

    5.
Test 1 ram by 1 ram?

    6.
There is nothing to do with the bios. After every successful copy files to the hard disk, it is automatic set to boot up for the next phase of installation, if you didnt hit any key.

Throughout the no.1 to no.6 which I quoted, really curious, how you manage to fully copied XP files for installation as mentioned on no.1, more curious is, before you see the blue screen then the red bar, you should see option to format and if the board can't detect the hard disk, how the installation as you mentioned on no.1?

Lastly have you try changing the IDE Cable? Just another curious.

Well your 1st boot Device must be CD/DVD drive ... after the blue screen setup when it reboots change the 1st boot device to HDD ( your hard drive where you are installing xp) < this can be found in bios or sometimes you can select boot device menu by pressing F8 but that depends on the make of the mother board so just get into bios and do it :)
you can get into bios by pressing Del again this may differ on the make of the motherboard.

kev.. i have tried all that.. haha yea i never thought it was possible either.. i know after i get past the red restart bar screen it doesn't go anywhere after that.. i go into bios and it shows no hard drive.. every once in a while i will get the ntldr but i go into repair copy the files over.. and still back the same thing again... thats why my best guess is the bios i think....

Enter the BIOS of your machine, and set the primary drive to HDD1 - your first (and usually only) harddrive.

This will stop the autoboot from CD.

Well the steps are in this order ... First boot from CD ... after it finish copying files and restart, when you see boot again , just dont press any key. It knows what to do. :D After that just follow the basic procedure. Good luck!

It is possible, and I have seen this problem only once during my career as a computer technician, and yup I was also amazed to hear it happen, and couldn't believe until I saw it with my own eyes. But for god sakes I cannot remember exactly what was the solution, I just remember that I have searched google with something like: Windows install Loop and I think I've tried a few things that were mentioned in some other forum and got it working. If I do remember in the meantime I will guys let you know, maybe the guy who bought the machine will stumble across this thread :)
