    Hi,

    The given below will tell the purpose of links for a website,

    - When people clicks links on website then there is a chance of discover a site.
    - Search engine follows links for crawling and discover a site
    - Search engine considers the number of back links to give important to a site.
    - Anchor text of links in a website tells what is site about.

    i expecting more points .....

    yup i think u may have mentioned the main focus of links here...

    -Search engines organise the links into a manageable single point of reference. (serp)

    spiders crawl, relate the links and content to each other and build a massive 3d kind of intertwining profile matching the links, hence the world wide WEB... of links...
