Hello all. I've been reading a lot on getting backlinks. I had an idea to use the following strategy to start getting a bunch of backlinks to my website:

    FREE LINK BUILDING:

    Directory Submits
    Social Bookmarking
    Article Marketing
    Social Media Marketing
    Digital Point Ad Network
    Webmaster Forums Related Link Exchanges
    DOFOLLOW Blog Comments
    DOFOLLOW Forum Posts

    PAID LINK BUILDING:

    TNX
    Text Link Ads
    Direct-Link-Ads
    etc..

I need around 500 backlinks to beat out the #1 site for one of my keywords.

I also need around 21,000 backlinks to beat out the #1 site for my other keyword.

My question is how quickly should I get these links?

I don't want Google to put me in the sandbox!! Should I make this a 3 month program, 6 month program, maybe even a year long program?

More important than whether the timeframe is 3 months, 6 months etc is the consistency of the building. Build plenty each day but keep them coming not all at once. Any good algorithm would seek to notice and reward natural linking but natural linking could mean 100 links a week or 10 links a week. That's the nature of the net and Google knows that.

I don't believe there's a magic number at all which is ok or not ok. But patterns can be perceived more readily than link numbers. So get links far and wide across the net from a variety of websites with as many in related niches as possible.

How do you know you need 500/21K links to outrank your competitor? It is not just the quantity, but you should match their quality too when you build links.

If you build too many links too quickly, Google may not like it. I think should just plan for building X number of links per week and make sure you will get it from variety of sources and page ranks

Make sure your links are obtained "naturally" and keep developing content. Ensure that the links are from relevant sites and I think you'll be surprised with your results.

I am curious how you know this as well. It also depends on the quality of sites and so many other factors like your on page SEO.

It's a good question... not all links are equal - maybe you should concentrate on fewer links, but High PR ones?

The people above made some good points regarding quality of links being more important than quantity. It is impossible to accurately guess how many links you need to obtain a certain ranking. It depends on the quality of your links and the quality of your competitors links. It also depends on many other factors such as onpage optimization, domain age, backlink ages, etc.

Overall your strategy sounds pretty good. Be careful with how much link buying you do though. Since Google is fighting back against that strategy, you would stand a chance of being penalized or the links might just not count. If you want Google rankings you should avoid anything spammy. You need to earn their trust.

As for how quickly you should deploy your strategy....set a manageable pace that you can keep up for months. If you start too aggressively Google may a big drop in links. As you build links focus on variety....a variety of link sources and a variety of link anchor texts. Don't go and build all your links with the exact same link anchor text or you will likely be penalized due to obvious spam.

As long as you spread out your links over a period of time and the links are relevant to the theme of your site you will not have a problem... and no links in will be over kill :)

I think there is no way that we can find out how to beat our competitors in google listing for any keywords. It might be page rank, keyword utilization in your site itself, links among the pages in the site, and more.

First, clean your house with these tools then take care of the outdoor (backlinks).

All the strategies you have listed above are great. The truth of the matter is that no one can give you an answer as on how long it will take. It truly depends on the quality of the links you get to your website and how fast the bots crawl and index them.
