    hi,
I want to develop an application which will be able to keep records into a xml, or whatever file . the records will be simple such as name, price, date, etc.
also, I want to be able to export into pdf and excel and also to import from excel things.
but, the most important thing is that I need it to run in the system tray and to do simple pings to websites and notice me via a message when the server is down via tray box.

    which programming language?

You could probably use VB although javascript or C++ would be better I believe.

Have you looked at Adobe AIR? That seems perfect for little widgets like this. My understanding is that would be easier to make cross-platform, and therefore run on Mac, Windows and Linux.

Sorry... just tossing out some suggestions.

How do you plan on programming something if you don't even know the capabilities of the language you're going to use? Or were you just planning to learn it as you go?
