So my first site is being designed right now...

The designer is great but knows very little about SEO, as do I.

    I want to learn!!!!

My site offers seasonal residential household services, I started the company in the summer and I did ok. But I spent way too much time delivering flyers to drum up business.

So I want my site to be represented on these search engine results, so my only question is what is the best way to learn the trade?

I just want something to start me off, maybe a good book?

    Something not too advanced..

Do some research on basic "on page SEO" and "link building". Basically on page SEO entails researching keywords that people would use to find your business. Then getting those keywords in your page titles, page descriptions, H1 tags, and of course the page text.

Once that's done you need to get links back to your site. You can get these from web directories, forums, blogs, other people you know that have a related web site, etc.

Here's google's starter SEO guide that should help you. http://www.google.com/webmasters/docs/search-engine-optimization-starter-guide.pdf

SEO is a very large subject. All we can do here is to give answer to only specific question. There are many tips out there that you can read (just google it), and post here if you have any problem.

Thanks for refering the document freelistfool - http://www.google.com/webmasters/docs/search-engine-optimization-starter-guide.pdf ... but, this only contains on-page search engine optimization.

To go further than that, basically, you need to learn about "link building" first.

    Hi
    Follow on-page factors like:
    Keyword research
    Update content
    site map
    Keyword Density
    Title ,Description,meta tags etc
    Off-Page Factors like :
    Directory Submission
    Social Media
    Articles
    Press Releases
Apart from these you also have a paid tactic called PPC.
Hope all these help you but all these take time and effort to build. A company with a professional repute can reap you benefits.
    Cheers

Keep SEO simple, build great content around profitable keywords, on-page optimize the content around the keywords and then get links using a strategy that does not take all of your time, social media, directories and the least time consuming exchanges...

    Good luck
