Thanks for the quick reply. What does reupload mean? Should I upload files coming from a backup and overwriting except for the two files you mentioned?
Just download a fresh copy of Wordpress and upload those files except for the two I mentioned. If you aren't currently using the latest version of WP then you can also upgrade at the same time as doing this- if you'd prefer not to upgrade then just download the same version of WP that you have from the wordpress.org release list.
move all your plugins to a backup folder then delete them from the plugins folder, that should disable it making the widgets empty. then try
